OBAMA'S CAIRO SPEECH COULD HAVE BEEN BRAVER

Lionheart:

Oddly enough I don't come here to entertain you. Those who expect to be entertained by me, pay me. My current rates are between $500 and $875 a page. Write me a check and I'll do my best.

It's going to be a tough day in Wingnuttia. It was a good speech and I'm not seeing the right get much of a handle on it.

But I'm sure given time and the tireless efforts of Fox News the right will come up with some incontrovertible evidence that Obama hates America, loves terrorists and is suspiciously fond of Europeans to boot.

A PREVIEW OF OBAMA'S TRIP TO THE MIDDLE EAST AND EUROPE

My personal position on Dresden and Hiroshima et al is: if you don't want your cities burned to the ground don't make war on the United States.

I would work the Dresden-Buchenwald speech around to point out that while we were burning Germans at Dresden, Germans were burning Germans at Buchenwald. German Jews were, after all, Germans. Of course many other nationalities were murdered as well, but the mass-slaughter of Germans was begun by Germany. WW2 was as much an act of suicide as it was murder and a nation that shows no respect for the lives of its own people can hardly expect us to live up to a higher standard.

Of course I'd say it all in that charming Obama way as opposed to the thuggish Reynolds way.

This is pure doublespeak - appearing to take his predecessor to task for “imposing” concepts like democracy and the rule of law on Iraq while chiding other nations for not embracing those same values.

I don't see the problem. He's saying Democracy is a great thing, you folks ought to try it, but we were wrong to try and ram it down your throat.

I don't entirely agree with him, but there's nothing naive or foolish about saying, "You should do X, but we won't force you to do X."

We'll just burn your cities down if you mess with us.

CONSERVATIVES KEEP LEARNING THE WRONG LESSONS FROM REAGAN

Michael S:

You lost what little credibility you might have ever had when you started using situations in California to try and justify the ‘Hope and Change’ we’re getting from the Obama Administration.

Perfectly understandable. Except that I never did any such thing. I think you have me confused with someone else.

Chuck:

It's hardly worth bothering. They're just throwing out random snarls and limp insults now. That's what the GOP has become: a bunch of constipated, toothless old white guys snarling and snapping about the good old days when "Ronnie Reagan was president, why these young whipersnappers today, garrrh, you can have 'em. Things were different in my day. . . now where's my tapioca?"

And his faith in the American people is lacking if he believes we can’t make our own decisions about everything from health insurance to EFCA.

We did make those decisions: we elected a president to do what Obama is doing.

As for Mr. Reagan, I always enjoy reminding the cult of Saint Ronnie of a number: 241. The cult's least favorite number.

NOTHING MUCH TO SAY ABOUT TILLER'S DEATH

Sorry, I mistyped. Tiller's actions were protected, the killer's actions were not.

Need more coffee.

Randall Terry is a creep. But his speech, however objectionable, is protected. Tiller's actions are not protected.

If Operation Rescue knew in advance, or lent assistance or financial support then those actions may violate laws. But there's no law against inflammatory rhetoric or stupidity.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE DATE NIGHT IN HISTORY

Gayle:

Oh, so sorry: you missed the boat on this particular phony outrage. It never got any traction.

But never fear, the GOP outrage factory will spit out something equally ludicrous in a few days. You can get yourself worked up all over again.

C3:

Well, Republicans are doing so very much to prove they are idiots.

But that's not my main point at all. My main point is much more specific. It is that Rick's not nearly enough of an idiot to continue being a Republican. I'm hoping he'll eventually come to his senses, throw off the cold, dead hand of The Base, and make formal his move from "R" to "I." (I wouldn't suggest he go all the way to "D." Not right away.)

So actually, I'm helping. Because I am all about the love and the helping.
