Word from Ward's group. It apparently got very hot for them on the way out of Devil's Den; the Rebs snuck in a sniper or two, and our artillery couldn't make a move without getting peppered with rifle fire. They managed to fire off a few cannon, and one of them must have hit its target, because the snipers laid off afterward...

I concur with Hector. Your anonymous author needs to start fisking the Copperheads.
And meanwhile, you might speculate about Lee's state of mind. The last time he brought any troops up that far, somebody leaked his Special Order 191 to the Union - and the Rebs lost Antietam.
