AN AMERICAN PROBLEM

Rick, you're spot-on on tortue issue, just as you are with your stark, realistic assessment of the War. Keep sluggin' em out of the park.

WHAT ARE WE "WINNING?"

Rick, you're at your best when you hit the nail square on the head. Unlike many Hobson's Choices, the jam we're now in was foreseen by Scowcroft, Baker, et al., which means little now. We can't stay and we can't leave= and we're hated either way. Guess there's always deux ex machina- pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Which is about as realistic as some of our other policy endeavors to date. Thanks again for your brilliant commentary on the war.

RETHINKING "THE SPEECH"

Jack at 6, you're correct. The discernible principle justifying the axing of Imus and the embracing of Wright is either personal loyalty or the race of the actor- hardly solid core values. My particular speech favorite was the observation that Wright was always courteous to white people. Wow. Guess that justfies his pulpit rantings. I get it.

STILL AT RISK: THE SHOCKING IGNORANCE OF OUR YOUNG

Excellent post, Rick. Much of this goes back to the 70s, when the educational elite decided that rote learning was much less important than 'learning how to think', as if those propositions were mutually exclusive. The result? A generation of otherwise bright kids who are empty vessels. My daughter, who is now a college senior, did not have her first post-1700 US history class in high school until her sophomore year. Before that, she was inundated with Indian folklore, making teepees- you know the drill.

WHO HAS THE POWER?

Somehow I'm thinking that the McCain rush may be more of a function of name recognition and time in grade than an ideological seismic shift.

Now the more pressing question: where's a physically fit, anarcho-libertarian nihilist supposed go? I didn't leave my party; it left me. :)

A SHORT BUT PITHY NOTE ON ACHIEVING THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 54

Gotcha by a year, dude. The odd thing is that the politics of the late 60s and early 70s are hardly faint memories- they're fresh in my mind. Until, of course, I step back and realize that 40 years have whipped by since '68. How can that be? Awaiting a tortured explanation. In the meantime, have a happy birthday.

THE ANTI-SOUND BITE CANDIDATE

He treats voters like “adults”... No wonder he's not winning. What kind of strategy is THAT?

THE GOP RACE IS A MESS

Michael at 11: I was worse- I picked McGovern. But I voted absentee- on my way to Saigon. Figured what the hell.

Hey, Rick- it's par for the course- at least in general elections. Choosing the lesser of two evils is what I've done in every election since 1972.

Brilliant piece, Rick, as usual. Unless someone gains breakout momentum in SC (unlikely), FL will likely split relatively evenly between 4 candidates. With no breakout candidate on Super Tuesday, it'll likely be muddled. And here's what few are mentioning- except for Mitt, everybody's broke. Who but Mitt can afford CA statewide advertising, much less nationwide ads? I don't think that Mitt's the preemptive favorite because of this, but being cash poor on Super T isn't a great place to be.
