I absolutely agree about the trend on History. I used to watch all the time for the interesting programs on, well, American History. Civil War, American Revolution, the Presidents, all that stuff. It seems to have lost its way somewhat. I would suggest checking out some of the Weather Channel's programs on "When Weather Changed History" for some good history programs. Tonight was a repeat of the First Iditarod. Great program even though we know how it ends. Also, on Dish, I get something called the Military. It seems to be a network that engages in quite a bit of 20th century military history. I just found it, but I'm going to keep it in mind.

I think every school should have a course in cultural knowledge, basic facts that everybody should know. I mentioned this to my college student kids and their response was that in my day, you know, like a thousand years ago, students had to memorize facts. Now, they explained, the key is knowing how to find those facts. That is, because the internet is so handy, it substitutes for basic memorization. I don't know, I think they should still have those basic facts in their heads, but at least they have a defense.

A couple of things. First, there were four newspapers when Royko started at the News, the Daily News, the Trib, the Times and the Chicago America. When the News folded he moved to the Trib because the Times was owned by a "foreigner" who was too right wing, and the American was also out of business.
The more important thing is that Obama did NOT receive any special consideration when he bought the house, his bid was the highest:
