ELECTION WORKERS IN OHIO GUILTY OF RIGGING RECOUNT (UPDATED)

The degree to which the infamous Florida "hanging chad" resulted in Bush's election remains questionable, but perhaps one of the inmates here at RN can explain the subtelties of antique voting booths...

My wife and I moved from St. Paul, MN, to a small town in upstate NY three years ago. This last election was the first one in which I actually went to my designated polling place since moving to NY (I voted by absentee ballot in previous elections.) In Minnesota, we filled out a ballot and it was read by an optical scanner. Here, we enter a booth, flip a bunch of switches and pull a lever to cast the ballot. We never see a piece of paper or receive any kind of confirmation that the votes reflect the choices we make.

If I can't see my ballot before it's cast, how do I know my vote is being accurately recorded? Local and state politics in NY are highly dubious in any case, and the fact that we continue using 100 year old technology to vote doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the process.

But then again, in a one-party state like NY, do voting procedures - regardless of how hopelessly outdated they may be - really have any bearing on the outcomes of elections?

THE STATE OF OUR NATION: LOOKS LIKE 1982

"Rank pessimism" is an appropriate turn of phrase, one that certain members of Congress should keep in mind as they continue trying to convince us that the United States can't possibly survive one mediocre President.

DEMOCRATS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS (PART 5,197)

Setting aside the dismal performance of the last Congress led by Republicans, no one can vote for a Democrat in a time of war and still claim to be a responsible citizen.

THE "GLORIOUS" BURDEN

Rick,

When I read this entry, I knew you'd be deleting a lot of comments. Any blog commenter - whatever their polticial persuasion - who thinks they can possibly fathom the responsibilities that accompany the Presidency of the United States is a) an unapologetic egomaniac, b)an idiot with a room temperature IQ or c) both.

The more I read this stuff, the less I like Americans. This rancor can be witnessed in all corners of the 'sphere, but, as I've stated numerous times, something is seriously wrong when a growing number of Americans look across the table and begin seeing enemies rather than fellow citizens.

DOING SOMETHING RIGHT: THE SOMALI RAID

I am a libertarian

but the left is more likely to actually debate

Really? The last time I engaged one of them in debate, in ended pretty much the way I expected. I was derided as a racist, homophobe, etc. Not by virtue of my statements, mind you, but simply because we didn't agree.

If that's the extent to which leftists "debate" issues, clearly there's no meaningful exchange taking place.

Rick,

Just what will it take for you to support military action to kill our enemies?

Obviously I'm not the intended recipient of this question, but leftists will begin supporting these types of actions when they begin hating enemies of the United States more than they hate their American political opponents.

RELIGION AND POLITICS: INTOLERANCE IS GROWING

Rick,

In this case, it is simply a matter of using illogic to make the charge that since liberals don’t condemn the Islamists loud enough or often enough, they somehow support them – a bit of sophistry that understandably infuriates the left.

You can count me among those see American leftists as currying favor among Islamists, but not for the reason you cite. If their passive support of Islamists simply proceeded from an abiding belief in the tenets of multi-culturalism, I would agree with you. However, when they bandy about the term "religious right" as a pejorative and decry the onset of an American Christian theocracy - all evidence to the contrary - it isn't unreasonable to count this as tacit support of America's enemies. They would have everyone believe that I, as a conservative Christian, am as big a threat to this country as someone who tells third graders it's OK to kill Jews or straps bombs to retarded teenagers and promises them 72 virgins in the hereafter.

The echo chamber here in Blogland is a powerful instrument that enslaves adherents to a particular worldview and will brook no opposition. Apostasy on both sides is punished severely.

That's why I keep returning to the asylum. For what it's worth, I don't always agree with you, but at least you can dispassionately and intelligently challenge those who disagree.

THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY

Rick,

All if get is conspiracy theories and Democratic talking points.

Not true...I commented on your essay in the context of how Democratic party rhetoric suggests that they view those with whom they disagree as enemies rather than competitors. The fact that leftists are neither subject to journalistic scrutiny nor constrained by propriety supports this assertion. But if you really beleive this is the stuff of conspiracy theories, then I will refrain from any further comment.

Rick,

Nothing attracts the crazies like well-reasoned criticism of one of their kommissars and his adolescent antics. Really, you're above having to defend your assertions. If the shoe were on the other foot, we know they'd be howling 'til the cows come home.

That being said, your essay overlooked an important characteristic of the evolving leftist mentality. If Harry Reid's refusal to attend the funeral of a former US President symbolizes anything, it is the left's inclination to dehumanize their political opponents. After all, if Republicans and/or conservatives are something less than human, then they aren't really worhty of good manners and common decency, are they?
