WAKE ME WHEN IT'S OVER

And here we are in 2008, reaping the whirlwind of reform, counter-reform, and an ever deepening sense of ennui on the part of the average voter who is sickened by the bickering, the sniping and carping that goes on between the two parties.

Federal politics is possessed of an innate quality that demands the lion's share of any aspiring politician's decency and humanity. Perhaps it's always been like this, but I would venture a guess it's become several orders of magnitude more pernicious since, in the wake of Watergate, journalists appointed themselves the sole guardians of "truth" in the political arena.

In any case, most of these people I wouldn't even want living next to me, let alone controlling more than $3 trillion of the nation's wealth. At the end of the day, however, we get the government we choose, not the one we deserve.

NETNUTS RIGHTEOUS FURY A LITTLE MISPLACED

WR,

Rick's point was that it's irresponsible for elected leaders to be levelling baseless criticism at American military commanders during a time of war. Unless of course you agree that our esteemed leaders should insult the troops as a way of scoring cheap political points, like Senators Lurch and Turb... err, Durbin did.

Try to avoid reading too much into things - you're liable to hurt yourself.

DO THEY STILL TEACH PATRIOTIC SONGS TO KIDS?

It must be instilled by culturalizing children and exposing them to the sentiments and ideas that we all share about the United States; what it should stand for, how fortunate we are to have been born here, and the glorious ideas of liberty and freedom that so many have given their lives to defend.

When I saw the space shuttle launch last week on TV, I turned to my wife and asked, rhetorically, how anyone in this country could see something like that and not be proud to be an American.

We have much to be proud of, and even more to be grateful for. But it's a shame that it this wonderful age of moral relativism, trying to instill a sense of patriotism in our children through institutions like public schools has become an anachronism.

WAR? WHAT WAR?

Rick,

Shortly after the attacks, I listened to a local MPR program that featured an interview with a former U.S. attorney. He discussed the merits and drawbacks of conferring constitutional rights on foreigners in the United States who may be accused of committing or planning to commit acts of war against the United States. I called in and asked what benefit could be derived from trying to fight this war in American courts. Being an attorney, he cited case law that grants certain protections to foreigners and implied that accused terrorists would not be able to use our own laws against us. An unvconvincing response at best, but I got the impression he wasn't overly concerned about the specter of global islamic terrorism in spite of what happened just a few months before this program aired.

In any case, when the talking heads began entertaining the notion of affording terrorists the kind protections normally reserved for American citizens, I thought it was completely insane. Either we were at war or we weren't, but the idea of incarcerating people and giving them all the benefits of due process for warring against our country suggests that some jurists - such as those who rendered this decision - think the Constitution exists in a vacuum. The notion is so suicidally myopic as to defy belief that these kind of incompetent clowns can occupy seats in the federal judiciary.

Granting constitutional rights to foregn terrorists, abject failure in securing American borders and a attempts to stabilize Iraq in a half-hearted, half-assed way all indicate that no one in the federal government is realy serious about defending the country against the threat of global islamic terrorism. I swear to God, it'll take an attack 100X as bad as September 11 to end the juvenile antics that pass for governing these days.

PERSIAN GANGSTERS WILL TRY AMERICAN HOSTAGES FOR ESPIONAGE

Rick,

Why not just ban the people who appear to be trotting out that tired old canard about how we can trust megalomaniacal theocratic dictators but every US action or policy - especially under a Republican administration - is suspect?

The people in charge in Iran right now can't be trusted any farther than they can be thrown. To believe otherwise is beyond naive.

PROM DATE WITH A PIG

Rick,

If enough American citizens simply stop paying taxes, will the same government that apparently condones the illegal conduct of foreigners be forced to grant amnesty to American "tax protestors"?

SUFFERING BY COMPARISON

Judging by the kinds of questions that were asked, I'm sure the so-called debate was about as much fun for the candidates as throwing cowsh*t at the village idiot.

Lousy format, inane questions. Republicans should know better than to pin "Kick Me!" signs on their backs by participating in these absurd antics. Expecting fairness and decency from the likes of Mathews and Olberman is like expecting a zebra to change its stripes.

Now, when can we expect to see the Democratic contenders on FOX?

A NON ENDING TO A NON STORY

"A tale told by an idiot..."

Unfortunately, stories like this are what pass for news, provided they promote a certain agenda, yield, certain ratings or readership, etc.

This was one of the reason I quit blogging. After examining how events like this are reported, misreported, overreported - you name it - adding my two cents hardly seemed worth the effort any longer. No matter how infuriating some of this stuff may be, ultimately it has virtually no impact on our ongoing struggle to be decent people.

BTW, I hope you're not getting blogger's fatigue, Rick.

NANCY'S EXCELLENT MIDDLE EAST ADVENTURE

...Syria will be a pariah state anyway and Pelosi’s visit will be seen in retrospect as stupid and counterproductive.

History never holds Democrats properly accountable for their transgressions. If it did, the Democratic party would have disappeared after the Civil War. The Dominatrix of the House engaging in some absurd foreign policy antic will hardly warrant a footnote.
