WHY CONSERVATISM SUCKS RIGHT NOW

Y-E-S!

Welcome to the fight against far right "independent" strangeness. I see you are getting the same nasty comments I've had at The Pink Flamingo when I criticize these adorable traitors. As far as I'm concerned some of these guys are snuggling terribly close to treason.

Do you ever get the feeling they don't really want to defeat Obama?

THE ENDURING POPULARITY OF STAR TREK

I had the honor of doing a two hour interviewing the Great Bird of the Galaxy several years before his death.

Roddenberry was an extremely patriotic man, very proud of his military service and the years he spent as a cop. He was also very much "law and order". Star Trek was envisioned as a "wagon train to the stars", with the premise that any good science fiction should be tried as a western. If it worked as a western, then it would work as science fiction. Roddenberry specialized in writing scripts for the classic television westerns but was a closet science fiction writer who finally managed to get a break.

He was not Marxist, communist, or even a socialist, and was very much an admirer or Ronald Reagan. (I think he even wrote a couple of Death Valley Days episodes). I came away from the interview thinking he was probably a Republican.

The "idealism" of future came after Roddenberry realized that he was attracting a rather unusual fan base. I think the former cop in him "kicked in" as he literally profiled the people who were becoming involved as "Trekkies". Roddenberry told me he realized he had a responsibility to those people, who were, he felt, literally rudderless and were "followers". Very critical of cults and those who manipulated people, Roddenberry told me that he realized there was a possibility that he could give these people some ethics, morals and some values. Then - he began instilling these things into Star Trek.

His original vision was a product of the Cold War. He envisioned a time where humanity had finally recovered from a world that had gone to war and literally nearly bombed itself into the dark ages. He loved this nation so much, that one episode in particular, "The Omega Glory" reflected his view that freedom, though crushed, will eventually win over oppression.

The socialism came later, not as much as a statement of Roddenberry's politics but how he saw the evolution of society as it became more and more technical.

One of the over-riding themes in much of what he wrote was the idea of honor, especially within the military, which he very much admired.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT MODERATES: 1) MODERATES HAVE NO PRINCIPLES

Welcome to my world.

If we can get more reasonable conservatives to stand up for the GOP and the idea of actually winning elections we might get somewhere.

Funny thing, I'm considered "moderate" but have the same ideals and philosophy I did when Reagan was in office. Then I was "conservative". Something has happened with conservatives and it isn't good.

The talking heads appear to be on the cusp of starting a civil war within the GOP - probably for ratings and money. I wonder how "conservative" they would be if they weren't making tons of money being "conservative".

JEROME CORSI, SCREWBALL

Dear Rick;

Welcome to the fight. Thank you for recognizing there is a difference in these people and for standing up against them. I'm working on a Pink Flamingo post about standing up for right and against wrong. Thank you for doing what is right.

Welcome to the fight.

THE BATTLE OF GREASY GRASS CREEK

One little known fact is that Edward Drinker Cope (or was it O. C. Marsh - I always get those two mixed up) and a guide were dinosaur hunting in the region of the Little Bighorn just hours before the battle. Cope was in a position to get information to Custer, but couldn't be bothered. He was too busy trying to beat Marsh to the latest dig.

It was one of those miniscule events that would have changed the course of history. Cope & Marsh were so competitive they basically gave up all human decency the once possessed.

It was Marsh. And I think it was actually almost a day before Custer arrived - about the time the Indians were gathering. No white man in his right mind would stick around when so many enemies were swarming around the area. Don't think Marsh could have helped Custer much.

OBAMA CAMPAIGN AND THE WEEK FROM HELL

The worst of it is I'm beginning to think none of this matters to his supporters, which is a bit alarming in itself.

THE OBESITY CRUSADE

I agree with you. I have been overweight my entire life. I'm in decent health (problems not related to weight, but genetics - inner ear- and several broken bones). I've had an allergy to sunflower seeds for years. Now that it had been decreed that sunflower and cottonseed oil is "healthy", I am having terrible problems. I've ended up in the ER twice for what I thought was a heart-attack, but was a food allergy - due to the fact that those two products are politically correct. But - sunflower oil and cottonseed oil are healthy. So, I no longer eat at any fast food places. I must ask what oils are being used (oh, we're heart healthy). I may end up being "healthy" because so many products now have those two heart-healthy products in them that the only things I know I can consume safely are all fresh veggies.

Don't you realize people like us are stupid, mindless, vile, disgusting maggots on the back of humanity?

Funny how they never bother mentioning the cost of all those eating disorders.

CHILDREN'S ANTI-CLASSIC MOVIES ON THE WAY

I never liked the Wizard of Oz, even when I was a kid. I seem to remember it was one of those drugged out compositions, like Alice in Wonderland was inspired as a way for a pedophile to lure in the little girls next door. There are some very dark undertones in classic fairy tales. But then this is coming from the little kid who couldn't make it through Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, of Fantasia because they were so scary! As a child liked mythology and Laura Ingalls Wilder much better.

If I had kids, I don't even know if they would be allowed to go to movies today, let alone watch anything that wasn't on TVLand! There are just so many things pulling at kids, trying to force them to grow up sexually far too soon. I liken it to child abuse.
