CONSERVATIVE REALITY CHECK: WE STILL AREN'T VERY POPULAR AND ARE LOSING THE NEXT GENERATION

Cheney is a liar, in my opinion. Might want to find a better example. William Buckley, MAYBE.

GOP A BIG LOSER AT CPAC

Travis, you fail at reading comprehension. Note that I specifically did not give democrats a pass. I am not one.

If the GOP has one ability, it's framing things in such a way as to say omething one day, then to convince its followers that it didn't really say that and said something else the following day. The GOP is *masterful* at that. Yes, it's hypocrisy and reproachful, but it's what they do, and it works.

It's mostly because the average follower of the party isn't much smarter than your average Bassett Hound, and a little less gentle.

I'm not giving the Democrats a pass, by the way. Dangle something feel-good in front of them and they'll jump off a cliff, feeling good about themselves all the way down.

Both parties are only as good as their followers, and both parties suck.

FIREWORKS AT CPAC

And again, here's why I keep reading your site. I disagree with most stuff you write, but when you're right, you're right.

Personally, I'm ambivalent about gay marriage. I would be equally as happy with removing state sanctioned marriage for hetero couples. For me it's a matter of equality and nothing else.

But you're right, party be damned, it has to be dealt with, no matter where it rears its ugly head.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM AN ATHEIST TO ALL YOU BELIEVERS

As someone who very recently has had a direct spiritual experience but does not believe Jesus exists at the moment, and is trying to figure out where everything fits, thank you for this post. This is why I read this blog. Maybe you're off base on 90% of the stuff you write about, but then you write something like this and make up for it. I shared it on my facebook page.

'IQ OF A CELERY STALK?' WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT ONE?

I think I agree, and it's why I've generally bee staying out of politics and political debates lately. There's no room in it any more for the intelligent, it's just the ignorant and unaware flailing about and playing government. And Palin is the highest profile ignorant and unaware person out there so far.

Don't get me wrong, all politicians and political bloggers - left or right - embody this to one degree or another (if they didn't they wouldn't be politicians or political bloggers), but Palin has it down to an art and is in a class of her own.

THOUGHTS ON THE PASSAGE OF HEALTH CARE REFORM

I think everyone has a point here, but I have to side with busboy and Michael (I'm not a liberal) on one important point. It's true that the Republicans are a minority - but that doesn't mean that they couldn't influence what the bill contains. The problem is, they would have to do it by coming up with actual solutions that their (and other) constituents would say "hey, that's a pretty good idea". As long as the Democrats got the core of what they wanted, I'm sure they'd have been happy to "play around at the fringes" a little so they could get bipartisan support.

Instead, the Republicans turned themselves into a roadblock and got crushed.

One thing I learned many years ago. When a large, hundred ton boulder is rolling at you, stopping it is going to be impossible, but changing its course is much easier. The Republicans have not learned this lesson, or choose not to take it to heart.

THE FORMERLY CONSERVATIVE BLOG KNOWN AS REDSTATE

I lump blogs like redstate and hotair in the same stack as dailykos and firedoglake. Completely devoid of anything of import, subsisting on the impotent anger and rampant demagoguery that plagues both sides. I know you are a contributor to hot air, yet I do not retract that.

I visited the Daily Kos at one time and tried to contribute, ended up pretty much getting voted off the island because I did not toe the party line. Similar to what happened to you. The extreme sites of either side are utterly worthless and not worth the time spent to type their URL.

Then there are the sites that attempt to be even handed, such as The Moderate Voice, which I visit every now and then. They have left and right viewpoints, but there is no demagoguery and they really do try to be even-handed and see all sides of the issue.

Then there are sides such as yours and patterico, and maybe Crooks and Liars, who, while listing a little more partisan than is comfortable, at least avoid the hysterical screaming overreaction that is endemic to the more "fringe" blogs on both sides. I do not agree with everything you say. In fact, I really don't agree with at least half of what you say. But congratulations on rejecting one of the most vile blogs on your side, and I do hope that your journey continues to bear fruit.

MEN AND WOMEN AND PORN: A LOVE STORY

I have very mixed feelings about porn, but to me, it is a very "conservative" thing - or at least libertarian, to be able to make porn if one chooses and to consume porn if one so chooses. It is also a very "conservative" thing to be able to criticise those who make or consume porn.

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all, except when certain, very specific lines are crossed, regarding, specifically, consent or age.

ONLY THE BEGINNING

Foie gras is banned because of what has to e done to the duck in order to get foie gras, not because of its health impacts.

True - although the practice of fattening up ducks until they explode is a thing of the past.
