ANN COULTER: CONSERVATIVE LOUT

My friends:

I'm sorry, I don't buy into the parsing exercise some of you are using to try and excuse what Coulter said. I hope I made it clear that the point she was trying to make about the fallacy of grieving relatives having some kind of moral authority that immunizes them from criticism is valid.

But to those who don't think that the way you say something impacts the legitimacy of what you are saying, I have to say I think you're wrong.

And as for evidence that Coulter has somehow gotten out of control recently, I can recall when Coulter was considered a leading intellectual in the conservative movement. Her remarks the other day to Matt Lauer didn't take much thought and by no means can be considered representing a mainstream conservative point of view.

In short, I think there are boundaries that shouldn't be crossed regardless of the provocation or issue. Coulter has crossed it.

In any age, at any time, from either side of the political spectrum, it is unconscionable to say that a widow is glad her husband died.

It is hurtful, spiteful and uncalled for. It has nothing whatsoever to do with political correctness nor is it simply "fluff."

HOW you criticize someone is just as important in a democracy as what you say. That is my beef with Coulter.

A WORD ABOUT COURAGE

Doc:

Great points as usual.

Actually, they bombed the crap out of the coast as well as loosing those 18" shells from the 15 battleships offshore. The problem was that the concrete bunkers were 3 feet thick with a low sillouette. And the air bombardment missed horribly, most bombs landing 1-2 miles inland for some reason.

Omaha would have been a total disaster if not for one or two destroyers who almost beached themselves, so close to the shore they got, and helped to silence some of those bunkers with their six inch guns firing point blank at their targets.

The tanks were tested in calm waters, hence the snafu there as the Channel was choppy as hell.

But all your points are well taken - as is your counter-factual headline from the NYT. "Blame Roosevelt!"

GEORGE BUSH MADE ME HAVE SEX

Kyle:

I agree that some Christian conservatives go too far in advocating government action in many areas. However, I believe most of the responsible groups advocate a more 1st amendment friendly approach where networks (and video game manufacturers)voluntarily subscribe to a philosophy that protects children by showing adult programming after 9:00 pm est and placing warning labels on video games.

This seems to me to be a minimum intrusion and the very least those entities could do.

THE DIVERSITY OF THE GRAVE

Patch:

That's an excellent analysis. I never thought of it that way.

The town is Ishaqi and I blogged about here:

Turns out, it was probably al Qaeda propoganda aided by some local sympathizers.

AP covered the story extensively when it came out last March (I think). Where was the BBC then?
