I think what both Bush and Olmert want at this point is avoiding a clear cut defeat. The world press won't give Israel a victory no matter how this offensive turns out. So by insisting on an ironclad buffer - either policed by Israel or a multi national force - at least they keep the Hiz away from their old positions.

It's not much, but its all they have at this point.

Also, anyone coming from TBogg's site needs to line up next to the right sidebar and go through disinfection procedures first - before they enter my House.

You're right about the US-French resolution although they probably could have stopped the fighting in a couple of weeks by dispatching some kind of force to the buffer zone. They wouldn't need the entire 10-15,000 man unit. As long as Israel retained to right to go back in and keep the Hiz from reoccupying positions they had left, I think both sides would have gone for it.

And don't look for an acceptance by us or the Israelis of the Lebanese army moving in there. As I say in the article, they are totally unprepared for anything like this. And it still doesn't solve the problem of disarming the Hiz.

You may be right about Bolton except that the formulation he had with France on board would have meant another two weeks at least anyway for Israel. And I don't think Olmert would have approved this latest escalation without an assurance from Bush that he would have his 30 days.

Olmert would have settled for an international force in place before leaving. Now he's going to expand the bueffer zone by himself rather than simply having the UN mandate it.

Check that:

J-Post says the number of IDF troops on the border is -

Now that's what I call serious...

I think we're being a little too hard on the IDF.

While I agree somewhat with your assessment - I don't think they've applied maximium force yet - the problem is that th Hiz are very dug in; caves, hillsides with tunnels connecting fire positions.

It is very sophisticated designed to inflict the max number of IDF casualties before the fanatic is killed. And they appear to be using anti tank weapons like mortars - firing into buildings and IDF strongpoints.

What's needed is what John is talking about - max use of force to simply overwhelm them. And with 15,000 fresh troops sitting on the border waiting for the signal to step off, I think the IDF is about to get very serious.

Reality check: In 1943, the United States was united in the belief that both the Germans and the Japanese should be utterly defeated.

No one had a cow everytime something bad happened. Contrast that with today's America and I'm sure you see what I mean.

And I apologize for being so negative in that article but given the coming struggles, I am just not optimistic that we can face them. We are more likely to try and finesse them which would be disasterous.

Your analysis is reasonable and correct. But let me play devils advocate.

Israel is attacking the sovereign territory of Lebanon. Hizbullah is recognized by parliament as a military force (regardless of what everyone knows) of the government. Even though you and I know that this dispute is between Israel and Hizbullah, not Israel and Lebanon (per se) isn't the international community for purposes of the Convention forced to see Hizbullah as a "party" to the agreement?

Gang of One:

Sorry - you are certainly incorrect. Spock said it to Kirk immediately after the briefing about the peace initiative at the beginning of the film long before Chaing entered the picture. Since I just saw the movie again about a week ago, I am absolutely sure about it.

As for the rest of your critique, I am not disagreeing with your analysis. Everything you say is true. It troubles me however that most of the commenters here don't recognize the moral trap they've set for themselves. Should it really matter what others do? I would prefer being true to my own self, my own moral code rather than going against that code just because no one else follows it.

Why not go for the gold and sign up with the Rev Guards?

I understand that President Dinnerplate can always use a good man. Plus he's got all that Petrol cash lying around with nothing really to spend it on.

I mean, how many centrifuges does one man really need...?
