If you've been paying attention to what's happening, Ali Hakim of the SCIRI is in the process of building an alternate governing coalition - WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE FRICKING IRAQI CONSTITUTION - that would replace Maliki and eliminate the influence of al-Sadr on the government.

A couple of clarifications:
1. While there were 4 million political prisoners in guglags during his rule, most were put there by Stalin. The deaths could fairly be attributed to uncle Joe but Kruschev could be faulted for the slow pace of reforms.
2. The purges were mostly bloodless but involved getting rid of nationalists and installing loyal apparatchiks.
3. He did close 30% of the Orthodox churches in Russia during his rule.
Mass murderer? Maybe not. But his stupid gambling with the fate of the world in 1962 should take the luster off of any praise you might throw his way.

Back to business as usual by 1958. And his extraordinarily bellicose move of putting nuclear missiles in Cuba was one of the great miscalculations in history. I would say that Kennedy pulled his chestnuts out of the fire by his forebearance and his co-opting hawks like Dean Acheson and LeMay who wanted to bomb and invade.
The Black Book of Communism estimates that between 2.5-5 million people died in the Gulags during Kruschev's rule. Remember, he released many but then turned around and condemned another 4 million as he purged the party in Georgia, the Ukraine, and the Baltic Republics among others.
This doesn't include another 100,000 placed in mental institutions whose only sickness was that they didn't realize they were living in a workers' paradise.

Secondly, what are you arguing with me about? The reason a corpse could have won that race is because of the fact that Alan Keyes entered the race on August 8 and promptly committed political suicide.
You don't know how Ryan would have done. Nor do we know how Obama would have responded to a genuine candidate who took him on the issues and not on his support for abortion or gay rights. That was the entire point of my article. The man has not been tested in big time political combat.
And reading his statements on a variety of issues, one is left wanting much more in the way of specificity. He's clever by not saying much - but it also raises questions about what he really believes; another point I tried to make in the article.
