I KNOW WHAT WENT WRONG

1. The people were not dying. Distressed? Yes. Angry? Yes. Dying? No.

2.Perhaps you could explain why Oxfam and other aid groups like USAID only make air drops of food where there is local control by troops?

So much for "simplistic and juvenile"...unless you're talking about yourself.

You, sir, are a dunce.

"Drop water" where? At the Superdome? And have 25,000 people rush out to get it and have thousands killed in the melee?

I guess that means you want to kill all those "black people" because the death toll that would result from implementing your crackpot idea would kill more people than the hurricane ever did.

And you're right...I'm a effing racist. Kill all the black people! Kill all the black people!

To quote that great liberal philosopher Bugs Bunny: "What a maroon!"

You're wrong. I think FEMA screwed up. But WTF is going on here when we treat this Nagin fellow as a goddamn hero when there were millions of gallons of water and millions of MRE's within spitting distance of where his fat ass was sitting on Tuesday and Wednesday and he doesn't do a damn thing to distribute them?

That "human toll" is a direct result of the incompetence of local officials letting a horrible situation become tragic. 500 police officers walk away from their jobs. More than 500 busses underwater because someone didn't move them to higher ground or, better yet PUT PEOPLE IN THEM AND GET THEM THE HELL OUT OF THE CITY!

Director Brown is a penis. But the Mayor of NO is criminally negligent.

And there is an essential idiocy in believing that the federal government is the best entity to handle local disasters.

Each disaster we're faced with, we say "We'll do better next time." We never do. We continue to pile more and more responsibility on the feds all the while ignoring the facts of life - proven again with Katrina.

Those facts include unless supplies are prepositioned, no significant help will arrive until the roads are clear. In this case, damage from the storm extended 150 miles from the coast. Even though DHS had a convoy of trucks that stretched from just outside NO to the Texas border, there was only one bridge capable of supporting truck traffic into the city. And the road to that bridge was strewn for miles with fallen tree limbs, lightposts, and utility lines.

When the investigations are complete, I'm pretty sure FEMA will be skewered. I'm absolutely certain that Mayor Nagin, Governor Blanco, and Director Ebbert (local DHS) will come out looking criminally negligent. The feds didn't lose control of the city - the mayor did. And the governor's sluggishness in deploying the remaining Guardsmen will I'm absolutely sure come in for some scathing criticism.

Besides, when the same officials who are at fault are going on TV and saying the feds don't care, do you expect the feds to just stand there and not point out THEIR shortcomings?

THere will be plenty of blame to go around here. But get off your high horse about "moral bancruptcy" and recognize that fact.

Thanks...those are kind words.

However, I do get to bloviate at times which is why this blog is so much fun. And I can be as partisan as the next conservative.

Still...your thoughts and readership are appreciated.

Laura:

I saw that interview with Brown and I'm not sure the idiot misunderstood and was talking about the Superdome - which would be typical because according to his paper "plan" the people at the Superdome had enough for two meals a day...FOR TWO DAYS!

That said, I've been looking for any reference whatsoever to the Convention center before CNN got there on Thursday morning and can't find a one. The fact that local officials "lost" 4 or 5000 people for 3 days would be unbelievable except it pretty much goes hand in hand with the other blunders - not all local - that were occurring.

Laura:

Excellent point.

In answer to your question, even the Times-Picyune never mentioned the thousands of people at the convention center until thursday. It's like thousands of people suddenly appeared out of nowhere. This is what makes the TP "Open Letter" to the President so disingenuous. If the TP didn't know about those people until Thursday, how could the feds? I don't believe that FEMA's budget - as bloated as it is - allowed for hiring a staff psychic this year.

When FEMA Director Brown said on Thursday that his agency had not heard of the Convention Center as a shelter I was stunned as I'm sure most people were. And I think when all is said and done that it will be discovered that no one at the local level ever told FEMA about it nor did many of them know about it themselves. The fact that there were just a few policemen there would seem to confirm that.

Who is to blame for that? Hard to say which is why this is an evolving timeline. I've already received dozens of suggestions most of which I've turned down because the info was contained in the link to each segment.

If anyone wants to help out with some links to a convention center response timeline, I'd appreciate it.

Remember...I'm not looking for horror stories. I'm looking for actions or responses announced by local, state, or federal agencies.
