The point of my post is, exactly that. So what. It's political.
It will also probably be competently handled finally. Does world need an American leader who talks smack and doesn't deliver or someone who is quietly competent and thoughtful working on these problems.
What bugs me is the implication is that Obama doesn't love America or think we stand out among all the world's nations for the ideals we say we espouse. His approach is for us to live up to our self image again.
Instead of saying we're great, we need to be great again. That means no torture, closing Guantanamo as soon as practical, and accepting that we aren't the swaggering giant our actions seemed to indicate.

But I think it logical to think that a strong belief in your own country’s superiority might make his job a little easier.
You'd think the man hadn't just committed 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan after already sending 15,000 earlier this year.
Dick Cheney can go Cheney himself. It was him and his boss who created this goat screw, president Obama is trying to fix it.

Please read what I wrote a little closer.
I am not saying the present state of the Republican party is not qualitatively different than 1980.
But, and it's a big but, the GOP started on this path inevitably when it hooked up with the Christian troops to power their machine.
People don't believe in evolution, demand prayer in schools, start segregated Christian academies to circumvent integration, oppose abortion in all its forms, and believe liberals to be literally evil working hand in hand with the devil will eventually become a headache to your ownselves someday. That day is here.
It's 2009 and you're shocked, shocked to find out that such world views lend themselves to the rise of empty headed zealots like Sarah Palin.
I'm not disputing that YOU'RE shocked.

Since it started getting Republicans elected in greater numbers, starting around 1980. I know that insults Saint Ronnie, but from our perspective it's true. Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, etc.

conservatives have become a frothing, hate-filled, imprudent gaggle of screeching, populist harpies who reject reason and logic for a crass emotionalism.
That sums it up nicely.
All we have to do is pass Health Care Reform and focus on jobs, jobs, jobs and pounding the banks over mortgage fixes for the next 10 months.
Obama has made the correct choice on Afghanistan militarily and politically. In fact the delay was based on his insistence that the military move faster, not slower to implement the plan. Shock and Awe for real this time.
Republicans will have no choice but to appease the teabaggers by opposing Unemployment Insurance extensions, public works, and continue rooting for failure of bailed out firms.
GM and BofA's repayments will kill that narrative.
The GOP is well and good frakked.
Depending on the level of teh crazy, perhaps a little bit in 2010 and reamed for certain in 2012.
