A LONG, COLD WINTER

Rick, I agree with the basic premise here- the bailout stinks to high heaven, and there are no penalties involved that will prevent folks from abusing the system so that this happens again. We are at the mercy of con artists who run up enough bills that they put our economy in jeopardy. I would love to see a discussion started about that, but it always seems to run afoul of the Free Market vs. Regulatory Red Tape fake argument.

I also agree that the bailout will get larded up with goodies for both parties, more so for the party in power, the Democrats. That also makes me sick.

I disagree, though, about your point that "it doesn’t appear there are any grown ups in Washington who want to bite the bullet and do what is right for the country." I think that there are such people, but you will never hear about them in the news. There are Representatives and Senators who do care... and there are plenty of staffers who care, and they are the ones who are really dealing with the ramifications of this bailout.

Finally, I feel that neither Presidential candidate is in a position to help with this... running for President does not translate to negotiating power in this case. Both candidates are Senators who are not on the relevant committees, and that is where the power is in this case. Also, Senators are not welcome when the House of Representatives are working something out.

Publicly "riding to the rescue" as McCain did is a stunt, I agree. But McCain's "working the phones" behind the scenes is perfectly appropriate, and so is Obama's "working the phones" behind the scenes. That is not the same as being MIA.

OBAMA SUPPORTERS UNDERCUT CANDIDATE'S CRITIQUE OF MCCAIN

When John McCain says that the fundamentals of the economy are strong, he is, in fact, correct. But saying that he "sought to keep people calm and try to reassure them" is an opinion. That is your spin, which shows your editorial bias. My opinion is that he is trying to minimize the damage that the bad economy is having on people's perceptions of the Republican Administration, and by extension, his candidacy.

I think it's fair game to challenge this truth on that basis.

I will buy part of that arguement. That would probably let Obama off the hook.

But Biden's statement was pure lies - saying McCain said things that he never said.

LIEBERMAN BURNS HIS BRIDGES: WILL SPEAK AT RNC

"... the Democrats will publicly humiliate Lieberman, emasculating him by stripping him of his plum committee assignments..."

No mention of the quid pro quo here, that Lieberman did not break with the Democrats solely because of his plum committee assignments? And that Lieberman used the razor-thin Dem majority to his advantage? You are usually more honest than that.

Liberman did not want to break with the Dems - but many of them - including Harry Reid - have made no bones about not wanting him around.

Liberman did not leave the Democratic party - they kicked him out and if they had one more senator, they would have stripped him of his committees after 2006.

CONSPIRACY MILL CHURNING ON OBAMA PASSPORT STORY

Yawn... gosh. something that looks like oppo research is viewed by some blogs as a conspiracy. This includes Macsmind, who says "... it’s my belief that whatever they found is already out there somewhere, and I imagine it’s very damning."

I agree that this is a non-story, but when bloggers find conspiracies, that's also a non-story. Shoot any fish in a barrel lately, Rick?

THE IRAQ CONUNDRUM

"Liberals are not in favor of military action unless it can be seen as an act of self-abnegation." This is painting with an awfully broad brush- and, with regard to Afghanistan, is a lie.

As stated by others, the real problem is not a liberal or conservative problem- it's the problem of entrusting the over all strategy of Iraq to the Bush Administration.
