THE DARK SIDE OF "TRADITIONAL VALUES"

Jyllands-Posten is a Danish newspaper that published a series of cartoons of Muhammad to in September 2005 in an attempt to contribute to the debate regarding criticism of Islam and in protest to the self-censorship that the western media had imposed on itself. This sparked wide spread protests by Muslims worldwide which unmasked the real intolerant and violent nature of Muslims. While up to that moment, many people thought the Islamic violence is reserved to a few disenfranchised extremists, these riots showed that violence is the nature of Islam and turned the world public opinion against this cult.

Robert Redeker a French writer and philosophy teacher who on September 19, 2006, a few days before the Islamic month of Ramadan, wrote an opinion piece for Le Figaro, where he attacked Islam and Muhammad, writing: "Pitiless war leader, pillager, butcher of Jews and polygamous, this is how Mohammed is revealed by the Koran." He called the Qur'an "a book of incredible violence", adding: "Jesus is a master of love, Muhammad a master of hate." Afterwards, Redeker received various death threats and he is currently in hiding receiving police protection.

A MOST GHOULISH DEBATE

Sorry, ignore that. There were 654,965 "excess" deaths, not total deaths.

Here is a free .pdf of the study:

The numbers reported are absurd. Note: the researchers estimate that 654,965 people died (in total) post invasion. They estimate that 601,027 died as a result of violence. That means that in three and one third years, only 53,938 people died from all other causes combined - in a population of 27 million. That's 90,000,000 person years, 54,000 deaths, which means that the annual death rate (excluding violence) is 0.0006. Which implies that, on average, people who don't die of violence are living to be 1,668 years old.

Well done, Lancet. Report your results with confidence.

KATRINA: RESPONSE TIMELINE

I agree that there appear to be response problems at many levels in this crisis. But the person I'd point the finger at is Mayor Nagin. Why wasn't the Superdome stocked with provisions as, I'm told, the Astrodome is? Why did his police force begin looting (even being caught on TV news)? Where did half of the police force go? Why did Nagin begin his ranting? As the mayor (and leader) of his city, it's his job to be strong, project authority, strength, "gravitas", and ACT LIKE A LEADER! Not a whining brat being overwhelmed by events. Based on the timeline presented here, I retract my statement (posted in other blogs) that the mayor and LA governor be impeached and jailed. Looks like both were doing what they could based on the information they had at the time. But the mayor should've planned better.....that's his job. A leader who fails to plan plans to fail. That's what happened to Mayor Nagin. Hopefully, folks will remember that in the next election.
