THE SLAUGHTER OF THE MODERATES

Sometimes, leaving "communities alone to govern as they see fit" is not such a great idea. Think Jim Crowe. Mobs, I mean communities sometimes decide that someones civil rights are not so important, and it is against "their values" to allow some other American the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I am glad for federal do-gooders in some cases. Because my civil rights are not up for negotiation or a vote.

You need to deal with the reality, xenophone, that the Constitution of the United States is not there for you to alter and shit around with. The government exists to enforce the constitution. It is not subject to your whims, my son.

GUANTANAMO SUICIDES A STAIN ON AMERICAN JUSTICE

Thanks for saying what I have always said: We have an oustanding military; an outstanding justice system; and the highest standards in human rights in the world.

We are honoring our military, our civilians, and our constitution when we demand that prisoners get fair trials or that our military personnel conduct themselves in a manner befitting the uniform they wear.

Unfortunately, everyone is so burned up about Iraq and the war on terror (on both sides) that one cannot make a reasoned statement such as yours without both sides shreiking hysterically. (some examples of what is sure to be delivered to you sooon - THE RIGHT: YOU HAVE GONE SOFT AND YOU LOVE THE TERRORISTS!!!! THE LEFT: YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO COVER YOUR ASS, YOU RIGHT WING APOLOGIST!!!!).....

Thanks for saying what many reasonable people are thinking but are too tired to say (who wants to say anything and risk an exhausting, pointless argument with a slobbering rightwinger or a frothing leftwinger.)

April 12, 1999

"...Civilian passengers on board a passenger train have been killed by Nato missile strikes, according to Serb officials.....

...Nato has confirmed attacking the bridge 250km (155 miles) south-east of Belgrade, but is still investigating the reports of civilian deaths.

Military authorities in Belgrade say the train was crossing a deep river gorge when Nato planes attacked a nearby road bridge, severing electricity cables and cutting power to the train.

The Serbian military says the train was trapped on the rail bridge and was then hit by a second bombing run.

Two carriages were reported to have burst into flames and another two coaches thrown from the track.

Nato said the railway bridge was a vital supply line for Serbian troops in Kosovo...."

WHY I WILL DRAG MY SORRY ASS TO THE POLLS ON NOVEMBER 6

Very good post! I reminded myself about the people of Iraq when I didn't feel like voting in the primary in March. It was cold and rainy, and I knew that I would be voting for a candidate who would not win the primary.

The other motivation I have is that I want to be counted as a conservative. It seems like some believe that a "message" will be sent if conservatives sit out. I don't think the politicians will get this message, even with a loss. I think most will instead believe that they need to move to the center. They will take it as a sign that the country doesn't want Republicans (and therefore conservatives.) I know that is how the Democrats and the media will spin it at the very least.

I also enjoyed your post about Immigration. I've been looking for some calm and sane words about the situation, and finally found it here.

KATRINA RESPONSE: A STUDY OF INCOMPETENCE

To worn,
Formulas? You need a formula for the Rubik's Cube?
Can you solve the FEMA Cube?

Comment Posted By Lisa On 11.02.2006 @ 17:07

Should FEMA should be separated from DHS?
I think it make sense to consolidate departments to make them streamline.
FEMA was created in 1979 when Carter decided to combined different departments in the federal government so victims of natural disaster will get assistance right away. This would avoids tripping over each other and prevent turf warfare between departments.

http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761569608/Federal_Emergency_Management_Agency.html

Has FEMA worked as designed in the past? Have they fouled up before?

My British relatives were questioning the plight of New Orleans too. I told them 60% of the population wouldn't leave if a major hurricane came along.
"Many residents won't evacuate New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS, July 22 (UPI) -- A major hurricane, with 130 mph winds and an 18-foot-high storm surge, would not scare 60 percent of southeast Louisiana residents, a survey found."

http://www.sciencedaily.com/upi/index.php?feed=Science&article=UPI-1-20050722-18422300-bc-us-hurricanes.xml#

I told my relatives, ACE have been tinkering around with the Mississippi River for over 75 years trying to make the river run straight and in the process LA is losing their coastal wetlands. In the 70's the ACE wanted to build floodgates around the city but the eco's put a court order to stop construction. They were concerned over wildlife being displaced from development. Why couldn't they compromise to save the city and the birds and bees? Couldn't they create a National Park like the Everglades? I told them it was a ecological disaster.

People are People. Sometimes they don't listen to authorities to clear out of the soup bowl. Was it due to people being too poor to leave or just plain stubborness? Or did the populace put too much faith in the levee systems and the city pumps?

New Orleans did not take a direct hit from Katrina. That was the main concerned for the engineers. They were prepared for a direct hit not the storm surge.

Floyd was the same way. FEMA was prepared for the hurricane but not the floods. The poor lived in the flood zones and they got the short end of stick too. Many faced pollution from pig farms.

What are we going to do if terrorist used a chemcial attack on a major city. Were SOL! The past evacuation from hurricanes is futile. Cars were back up for miles in recent hurricanes and it was the same way during Floyd.

The problem is like a Rubic's Cube. You think you have it solve but you don't.

It's scary if you live in a urban area.

Comment Posted By Lisa On 11.02.2006 @ 11:05

People complained about the slowness of FEMA during Floyd?

Don't you expect government or relief organizations to be slow if the devastation is great? No roads, no airstrips or communication lines...and some of the NO police bugged out of the city.

What was Bush surprised by?

"In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Bush administration officials said they had been caught by surprise when they were told on Tuesday, Aug. 30, that a levee had broken, allowing floodwaters to engulf New Orleans."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/10/politics/10katrina.html?_r=1&ei=5094&en=d6fcffd6820bf50d&hp=&ex=1139547600&partner=homepage&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin

The Bush administration knew about levee toppings. I might sound silly but is there a difference between levee topping and a levee breech?

THE FULMINATER

NYC took an enormous hit by foreign terrorists and NYPD and NYFD worked tirelelssly, 24/7, for months to handle the devastation. Of the ten most costly storms in US history, Florida had 4 in 2004 alone. Alabama is reeling, but managing. There are those from NOPD who helped themselves to the Walmart post-storm specials and NOLA is giving NOPD paid vacations to Las Vegas after less than a week.

Rudy, Jeb, Haley work(ed) round the clock to manage their crises and save their locales. Nagin and Blanco play finger-pointing games while their people die.
