SCANDAL HYSTERIA GRIPS THE CAPITOL

The Dems criticized Bush for having no backup plan in case the surge fails. Could this scandal, and consequent diversion of attention from Iraq, be their backup plan for dealing any positive news about the surge?

THE SUCCESSION

Could someone tell Morris not to swing his left arm as he walks around. Wasn't it only hours before he got a drill bit run through his shoulder?

ISRAEL'S DILEMMA OVER IRAN

I'm pretty late getting to this post, but I have a question for anyone who cares to comment -- or direct me to a discussion elsewhere. Seems to me we are assuming Israel will launch an air attack against Iran's nuclear facilities because that was the way they eliminated the Iraqi reactor. What about the idea of Mossad identifying and targeting key Iranian scientists and technicians who operate the facilities? With this approach, the program would certainly be slowed or stopped, and US could plausibly deny involvement.

9/11: JUST A REAL BAD DAY

So, 3000 civilians murdered on our soil is no big deal, but 3000 dead soldiers in Iraq is horrific and warrants an immediate surrender. Does the left even debate these points?

THEATER OF THE ABSURD VICTIMS

The exploits of the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton continue successfully because of residual guilt in parts the white community and feelings of victimization in parts of the black. CAIR seems to think the playbook will work for them, but it just doesn’t when the viewers are looking at the “victims” but seeing planes fly into buildings. Catch a clue guys. This was the dumbest stunt since the Hispanics marched through Los Angeles waiving Mexican flags.

FAR EAST NUCLEAR DOMINOES READY TO FALL

ed: Drewsmom is just frustrated because of otto’s non-substantive comment. Clinton has lots of faults, but I don’t think this was one of them. So he tried a carrot approach that didn’t work In hindsight, a mistake? Well, maybe. What we want to know, otto, is how responsible adults would deal with this foreign policy issue?

GOLDBERG ON TORTURE: SOPHISTRY ON A STICK

Rick,

I haven’t seen this posted elsewhere, but here is an interesting historical parallel. Apparently waterboarding, or some variant thereof, is at least a 100 yr-old tradition. According to Edmund Morris’ “Theodore Rex” (2001) p.100, the U.S. Army practiced this torture method on Philippine insurgents whereby

“A man is thrown down on his back and three or four men sit on his arms and legs and hold him down and either a gun barrel or a rifle barrel or a carbine barrel or a stick as big as a belaying pin … is simply thrust into his jaws, … and then water is poured onto his face down his throat and nose … until the man gives some sign of giving in or becomes unconscious … His suffering must be that of a man who is drowning, but who cannot drown.”

Interestingly, in light of current discussion about Islamic terrorists using torture to force religious conversion, Morris states that Spanish priests developed this method “as a means of instilling reverence for the Holy Ghost.” Also interesting is the implied policy position from President T. Roosevelt that “great as the provocation has been in dealing with foes who habitually resort to treachery, murder, and torture against our men, nothing can justify the use of torture or inhuman conduct of any kind on the part of the American Army.”
