THE IRAQ CONUNDRUM

Grognard: Excellent post! These guys fighting each other has no downside for us.

There's nothing shallow about asking why it's our job to babysit these people, but from a purely practical standpoint it's obvious that we don't have enough troops for the job.

Why is it our job to keep Sunni & Shia from killing each other? They've been at it for a thousand years, and anyone who thinks American troops can mend that relationship needs their head examined.
When our troops are busy walling off compounds in Baghdad to prevent sectarian killing it's clearly past time to leave.

ARE CONSERVATIVES REALLY HOPING FOR ANOTHER 9/11?

Great article. I think we'd be smarter if (God forbid) another attack were to happen. Unless there were incontrovertible evidence that another country was behind it I think you'd see scant support for a military reaction.

WHO WILL STAND WITH LEBANON?

Hard to believe but next year will mark the 50th anniversary of a U.S. president (Eisenhower) sending marines into Lebanon because of political turmoil. Things don't change much...

IN THE CROSSHAIRS

I wouldn't assume this is the work of the Democrats. Don't you think Rommney, Guiliani or McCain's people are perfectly capable of 'planting' stories?

SUCCESS IN A VACUUM

If Muslims continue to kill each other after we leave Iraq that's their problem. We need to focus on the two strategic interests we have over there- oil and Israel. I think they'll continue to sell us oil, and I really think Israel can take care of itself.
Wramblin' Wreck: how many soldiers have to die so that you don't admit the Dems might have been right?

Great article. I feel like it's 1972 again. Everyday the lightbulb goes on in another politician's head and he or she realizes that there's no 'winning' to this war.

NEW JIHADI VIDEO GIVES HEART TO TERRORISTS

Your question "Does confronting the terrorists breed more terrorists"
My answer is: our military presence on the ground in the ME is definitely breeding terrorists. Every time Al Jazeera shows a 500 lb American bomb crashing into a house and killing women and children it probably creates 10 more Jihadis.
Please understand that I'm not saying it's the right interpretation of events- the terrorists clearly use women and children in this cynical manner, but that is the interpretation in the region.
If we leave Iraq and Afghanistan we would deprive AQ of its best recruiting tool.
The biggest disappointment for me is that all of the front running GOP candidates seem to want to continue what is (IMO) a failed foreign policy. "Taking the fight to the Enemy" makes a good sound bite, but lousy foreign policy.

SMELLS LIKE VINDICATION TO ME

Rick:
Unfortunately you'll find that being right in this situation results in short lived satisfaction. As you can see by some of the posts here you will come to be blamed for this defeat, and no facts will disabuse them of this belief.
Same thing happened to those of us who opposed the Vietnam war.
