FRED MAKES IT OFFICIAL

I confess I don't understand Thompson's allure. Can anyone name even one issue on which he differs substantially from Romney or Giuliani?

MAKING "SENSE" OF THE SURGE

Mike:
"because if their societies aren’t turned around we will face the threat of terrorism indefinitely."

What makes you (and others) think we can change cultures that are thousands of years old? And do you really believe that the American people will accept a troop presence in Iraq for another 30 or 40 years at the present casualty rate?

What the surge has succeeded in doing, more than anything, is raising expectations.
My guess is that if really concrete progress doesn't appear by say, January you're going to see a really ugly electorate just in time for the early primaries.
Unfortunately this is not up to us, it's up to the Iraqi government.

JESUS, LORD! ARE THEY ALL HYPOCRITICAL BASTARDS?

The Republican preoccupation with sex was one of the things that drove me from the Party (I'm a Libertarian). From impeaching Clinton for lying about a BJ to the 'Defense of Marriage Act' they've shown themselves to be addled hypocrites pandering to the Religous Right.
If the Party wants to get back on track they could start by telling the Social Conservatives to STFU and kick the issue of homosexual marriage back to the states (where it properly belongs).
Fight it at the state level if you wish, but don't destroy the national GOP by fighting to impose your morality on the rest of us.

EVACUATION AND DEFEAT

Best of luck Rick.

IRAQ IS NOT LIKE VIET NAM EXCEPT WHEN IT IS

V: One of the reasons the Surge appears to be working is that we're bypassing the national government and negotiating dirctly with tribes and local militias.
While this may engender success in the short term, what effect does it have on our stated goal of standing up a strong national goverment?

Sorry but I refuse to 'blame America' for the Cambodian genocide anymore than I would blame us for Sunni vs Shia violence if we left Iraq.
Certainly the Cambodians and Iraqis can take some responsibilty for affairs in their own countries, huh?

9/11 TRUTHERS GUT PUNCHED BY HISTORY CHANNEL

I honestly think that some people just refuse to believe that a big event (Pearl Harbor, Kennedy's assassination, 9/11 etc.) could be carried out without government complicity. It seems to threaten their universe to think that some nut with an Italian rifle can change history.
There isn't an event in recent history that doesn't have its share of conspiracy theorists. There's even a group who believe that John Wilkes Booth was not really killed in 1865.

CONSERVATIVES TO BUSH: "KEEP YOUR GRUBBY PAWS OUT OF OUR PRIVATE SPACES!"

“Some conservatives” who might support this program aren’t very conservative at all. "

I've been waiting since 9/11 for real conservatives to stand up to the fear mongers and oppose this kind of stuff.

TIGHTENING THE GORDIAN KNOT OF WAR

It's not just the right wing that's pushing this (although they may be the loudest). When you have liberal publications like the NYT saying that Iran must not be allowed to get the Bomb, the die is cast.
We either accept them as a member of the nuclear club or take action, because they're not backing down.
