THE GOP BAILOUT CONUNDRUM

Those Republicans who voted for the first bailout blew their credibility when it comes to opposing any further bailouts or stimulus packages.

SAVE THE AMERICAN FUR COMPANY!

Once the door has been opened to Govt. bailouts it's hard to then set limits. Bush will be in the unenviable position of explaining why the Financial sector (heavy Republican contributors) should be saved but Detroit and the UAW (major Democratic contributors) should not.
I would argue that AIG and the rest were just as poorly run as the big 3 automakers and also deserve to go belly up.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND

"The problem is your example is idiotic because Russia would have never, ever, ever, ever asked Mexico to join the Warsaw pact. Not in a million years. Not in a gazillion years – which makes your alternative history ridiculous."

That doesn't negate my point- that we would not have allowed a Warsaw Pact nation on our borders and Russia shouldn't be expected to jump for joy at the prospect of NATO on it's doorstep either.

Imagine if the Warsaw pact still existed, and imagine further that they invited Mexico to join. We'd blow a gasket, and you know it. Russia's need of a 'sphere of influence' is no less vital than ours.

The problem is your example is idiotic because Russia would have never, ever, ever, ever asked Mexico to join the Warsaw pact. Not in a million years. Not in a gazillion years - which makes your alternative history ridiculous.

Now let's suppose the Soviet Union collapses and nations formerly captive to them (Mexico was never part of the US) don't want to be recaptured at a later date. The seek out the protection of some powerful friends to prevent that from happening.

Putin and Russia have got to understand that the Soviet empire is dead and that we will never allow a revanchist Russian state to reacquire nations that do not want to be reintegrated into a new Russian superstate. Hence, our support for Georgia and the Ukraine. I doubt very much if the Russians will be able to duplicate this feat anywhere else in the former Soviet Empire. Watch for a couple of new NATO members in the next few months.

AMERICA'S SHAME

Boy Rick, you're going to lose your Right Wing decoder ring for this post!
I love how proponents of torture always drag out the 'ticking bomb' example to justify using this kind of stuff.
Here's my analogy to rebut that:
If you were on a jury and a man were brought before you who had stolen a loaf of bread to feed his family, would you convict him? Probably not because of the circumstances. You don't however make stealing legal- you temper the law with reason.
Same thing with torture. Keep it illegal and if someone were to torture a terrorist who had knowledge of an imminent attack I doubt any jury or administrative hearing would convict him or her.

CAN WE JUST WALK AWAY FROM IRAQ?

At least you challenge your own positions on a regular basis. IMO that's the hallmark of an intelligent person.

Not according to most people on the internet - blogs, boards, discussion groups. Changing your mind or even questioning orthodoxy especially on Iraq will get you branded as a weak minded traitor (or stooge). It's why until this past week I rarely wrote about Iraq over the last year. Just not worth the bull coming from both left and right.

GRIM AND GETTING GRIMMER

In my day after 8 weeks of basic training and another 8 weeks of advanced individual training the Army felt I was ready to take on the Soviets. My guess is that, (like ARVN troops) the Iraqis don't feel they have a cause worth dying for.

BEIRUT RIOT KILLS 8, WOUNDS 19

Anyone old enough to remember Ike sending marines into Lebanon in 1958? This was well before Hezbollah even existed. The situation's always the same there, only the names change.

SIPPIN' SOME KOOL ADE ON THE VERANDA WITH MY BUDDY OBAMA

The only thing we could offer the Iranians that would be of any value to them would be to get our troops out of the Middle East.
As long as we insist on being the big dog in the Gulf a confrontation is inevitable.
