AMERICA COMING TO ITS OWN CONSENSUS ABOUT THE ISG
Rick, that's got to be the most balanced assessment of the ISG's report I've read. Thanks.

I wonder if any of you who supported this war have learned anything from it. One of the posters above was talking about 'a new government for Iran'.

The lesson from Iraq is that it's relatively simple to knock over a ME government; what comes after is the hard part. These people don't take to democracy, don't like us and above all don't like Israel.
If I never hear the phrase 'regime change' again this debacle will have been worth it.
Great post. My father enlisted in the Marine Corp the next day and served in the Solomons. He told me that, when he first heard Pearl Harbor had been bombed he thought of a satchel type device, as aerial bombing was somewhat new.

GOODBYE TO ALL THAT: BOLTON ERA AT UN IS OVER
"Lebanon is in agony. Iraq is bleeding. Iran is blustering. Syria is plotting. Russia is swaggering. Hamas is stewing. Al Qaeda is growing. North Korea is disintegrating. Darfur is screaming."
I can't think of a better argument to suggest that a change is needed in our foreign policy, and to do that we need a new spokesman at the U.N.

AND SO IT BEGINS: HIZBULLAH TAKES TO THE STREETS
Our support of Israel's bombing campaign this summer severely weakened the March 14th forces.

BUSH PUTS THE SCREWS TO MALIKI
Great analysis Rick. The old adage "God helps those who help themselves" comes to mind.

Rick, you didn't give your opinion of what we ought to do.

While none of us wants to go 'hat in hand' to the Iranians and Syrians other options are slim.
THINGS AREN'T SO PEACHY FOR OUR ENEMIES EITHER
Well, that's certainly an interesting interpretation of events in the ME. I'm not sure that having a nuclear Iran would be a bad thing for Russia and China though, since that would blunt our influence in the region.

WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE ISRAELI-ISLAMIST WAR
"how can we tell the families of dead American soldiers that they fought with good reason, that their sacrifice was not in vain, that the cause was noble, but we just couldn’t stomach seeing it through to completion?"
Seems to me I heard that in 1969, when we'd 'only' lost 40,000 men in Vietnam. We went on to 'donate' another 18,000 bodies to honor that memory.

I was trying to make the point that Israel's attack was doomed from the start. I told my wife when the bombs started falling that the only winner would be Hezbollah.
We have to be smarter than the bad guys, not merely have better bombs.
BTW- you and I are the same age.
