WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE ISRAELI-ISLAMIST WAR

Israel has a huge problem which the cease-fire does not resolve. One of the bonus features of the DVD for "Cinderella Man" was an interview with the professional boxing trainer who prepped Russell Crowe for his role. He has a wonderful summation of the challenge of boxing: a boxer has to "solve" the problem of his opponent and he has to do so under enormous pressure. Israel did not "solve" the problem of Hezbollah's troublesome ability to hurl rockets across Israel's border. This cease-fire merely brings this opening round to a halt, but the outcome of this fight is very much in issue.

CARNIVAL OF THE CLUELESS #38: THE "HEY DUDE! WHERE'S MY COUNTRY?" EDITION

How could you not put Helen Thomas in the Hall of Fame? I would think she would be a shoo-in. I'd also consider Barbra Streisand and Cindy Sheehan.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DID DEPENDENCE KILL?

Sadly, I don't think this will lead to any real discussion on race and what has happened to the underclass in America these past 30 years. The film from N.O. and the powerful emotions these scenes evoke virtually assure that the conversation will be steered towards a traditional citation to the insurmountable forces of white racism. What follows will be the usual overheated rhetoric along with cries of "blaming the victim."

Accusations of racism or blaming the victim shuts down the critical faculties of many public thinkers.

Very very insightful piece about the toxic moral stew that has been brewing in America's major cities for the past three decades. Moynihan was not just a great thinker, he was a bit of a prophet. About two years ago, sadly witnessing the declining sense of human dignity on the streets of my city (Detroit), I got a copy of his infamous 1965 report. His projection of what happens to societies which fail to harness the energy and morality of young men was dead accurate.

The implications are extraordinary and all Americans, not just those of us who have the misfortune to share a polity with them, need to be afraid, very afraid.
