OBAMA BRAGS ABOUT BANKRUPTING COAL POWER PLANT COMPANIES

I was talking with an Air Force officer yesterday. He happens to be black but is admittedly republican. This time he is going with obama. Sounded like the Palin pick was his main justification. We talked a bit about the race and I told him I was mostly worried about the SC justice picks. His response was that odds are the liberals will be replaced first due to age, etc.
Point of that in relation to the coal issue is that he is basing his logic on "I don't think he will go that far or change things that much" -- leap of faith and picking which explanation Obama offers seems to be what the moderate Obama supporters are latching onto....

SPINNING THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

#10
Gayle,
Personal opinion of course but Hillary would walk all over Palin. Even if McCain pulled off the miracle win and decided to go only one term the odds of a fourth GOP administration would be very low. Hillary could play the centrist like a champ and most of the people who may sit out or vote for mccain this time would switch to Hillary.

WHO ARE YOU CALLING A MODERATE?

#26

"This is not meant to be petty or mean but to remind you that politics is a team sport."

I think this column did exactly that and is probably as good a time as any to remind people why the GOP is in this predicament. The "base" has been busy throwing everyone else off the boat. Because of his stance on the immigration bill he was practically excommunicated from the party 2 years ago. Perfect example of how a differing opinion makes a person "not worthy of being associated with the all knowing self-professed conservatives."
If McCain pulls off the miracle I am quite sure the ongoing theme will be how the conservatives "pulled McCain" over the finish line. BS tales of how Palin stood up to the boss over his administration to maintain conservative positions will be rampant as Dr. Frankenstein tries to revive the Reagan that never really existed in practice.
Back to party myopia as usual - get away RINOs and let the adults take over mentality.

THE MORAL COWARDICE OF SARAH PALIN

The more comments I read from the critics of moderates the more I think maybe - just maybe - I should vote for Obama. If for nothing else to see the GOP form its last circular firing squad amongst its base and implodes.
Only conservatives belong in the party - even the great Rush says so. Fine maybe I'll just move on over to the Democratic party after 30 years of supporting mostly GOP candidates.
The holy base acts treats moderates like the ugly cheerleader -- until election night lots of sweet talk and encouragement. Once the deed is done her number gets blocked...If enough moderates did so the blue dog dems would be a force to reckon with for the extremes of both parties.

Thanks for letting us post again Rick. I'm skeptical about Palin's long term chances if Mccain loses. She certainly wouldn't be appointed to an Obama cabinet so her natinal/international inexperience would be largely unchanged in 2012.

A SHORT, BUT PIQUANT NOTE, ON KNUCKLEDRAGGERS

Count me as one of those "government workers" oddities who does read what you write and for the most part agree with much of what you say. On the government workers comment I disagree. There are many more dedicated workers who work for lower pay (in exchange for job security) and day in day out make sure the physical and virtual infrastructures are being watched and protected with the tools we are given than the incompetents who get the press and give the rest of a bad name.

IF ELECTED, OBAMA WILL BE MY PRESIDENT

In case you haven't noticed, America in 2008 no longer resembles anything Mr. Moran read in his civics books. It hasn't for a while now, the only difference is that those that govern no longer feel constrained by much of anything. Good luck with the honorable thing Rick.

Good column Rick. It never ceases to amaze me how the lemmings are so willing to jump off the cliff. I was in the military from the first year of Reagan and retired just last year. The CDS and BDS made it into the military as well but not one person I ever met suggested we should shirk our duties or question our orders.
I get particularly frustrated at those who cavalierly talk about secession or revolution if Obama wins. The left tends to paint a McCain win as some sort of continued fascist state.
You are a few years older than I but close enough that I get what you mean about how it used to be. We both can remember the moon landing, watergate, oil embargo, recessions, etc. The country came out just fine and possibly a little wiser after each administration.
Our younger folks have not really known what hard economic times really are nor do they have to worry about being drafted and sent off to war.
Hopefully they will mature and quickly.

CLIMATE CHANGE? OR JUST A STRETCH OF BAD WEATHER?

Oecolampadius,
As others have suggested, the "leave it to the scientists, and especially the brights at the NAS" argument is ridiculous. I am a scientist at a large university, and I know many, many scientists, including NAS members. They are no more rational or reasonable than the guy who fixed my water heater. They are motivated by money, ego, political agendas, lab space, undergrad girls (the guys), university policies to whine about (the women, in order to get bigger pay raises), etc, and many of them are such utter fools I would not want them making decisions about when the cat box should emptied, much less social/political policy. These brights are prone to rejecting manuscripts that conflict with their research programs, rejecting grant proposals that might fund competing research, etc. They are not sources of wisdom or even reliable data. Leave unto scientists; sheesh.

TELL US WHAT YOU REALLY THINK, MATT

Ricky, my love, why didn't you tell everyone at Sadly, No! you've turned comments back on? Such a tease. (Don't worry, I made sure everyone knows.)
Good to see you haven't changed. Nice to see you call Stoller "hateful" when this entire post is a bitter, pathetic ad hominem attack on "the left". Self-awareness has never been your strong point, Ricky, but I love you still.
