WHY I AM SICK TO DEATH OF BOTH PARTIES

Rick,

I've said this often but if it so distasteful for a conservative to vote for McCain they should have one question beside all others before making a choice.
That simply is "Which candidate can I have the most confidence in that our military will be used wisely, armed, equipped and trained and not run based on polling numbers?"

If they can honestly say Obama or Hillary is more reliable I respect that. If not and they still choose not to vote they deserve scorn for abandoning the welfare of our military because they are too immature to do otherwise.

WHO HAS THE POWER?

I read an interesting article at
http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/014/691uddvk.asp

about the makeup of the voters who identify as conservative.

"McCain is probably the only Republican who can win as Reagan did. In 1980, in a three-man race, Reagan won 26 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of independents. In 1984, in a two-man race, he won 26 percent of Democrats again, plus 63 percent of independents. Nor did Reagan by any means always govern from the right. He often wisely bent his sincerely held conservative principles in order to get a legislative half-loaf, a partial regulatory rollback, and so on."

THE DEMOCRAT'S "WONDER BREAD" NATIONAL SECURITY POLICY

I guess we will see how true this turns out to be since the conservatives are abandoning ship if McCain is the nominee.

The whole "Support the troops" schtick from the right was nothing more meaningful than a campaign slogan. Abandoning the leadership of our military to a Hillary administration shows the true level of support that statement "really" meant.

GRIM CHOICES CONFRONT GOP

I don't want to be overly snarky but why don't conservatives just take a hike and promote Limbaugh as their standard bearer - at least they could finally be standing on principle rather than the bullying tactics they have used on moderates.

Conservatives seem to want respect but refuse to extend it. Of course this doesn't characterize all conservatives but a great many of the more vocal ones come across this way.

WHATEVER IT TAKES

This could make for some very interesting dynamics in the next couple of years. I think that the Clinton tactics may accomplish one of two things (1) Go overboard to the point that she loses the nomination battle, or (2) she wins the battle but in the general election the black voters stay home

In either case she will go too far. Turn to the GOP race and a McCain or Rudy nomination draws some disaffected dems who would have grudgingly voted along party lines against a Thompson or Romney candidate.

If she loses the nomination battle the only person who could effectively compete with Obama is Mcain. If she wins it the disaffected dems may see McCain as a viable option much as the "reagan dems" in 1980.
This is not a comparison to Reagan the person, simply the election atmosphere of 1980.

IT'S "THE FRED EFFECT"

I admire the faith of the FredHeads but I think it is for naught and will be a tough pill to swallow when he pulls out.

COULD CONSERVATIVES WORK WITH A PRESIDENT OBAMA?

#27
"The Democrats goals are not to get along, they are to get their agendas passed. No need to get Republican cooperation when they are the majority."

Do you honestly believe that the Republicans weren't acting the same way the last six years they held the majority? They did everything they could to slap the Dems around and deny them any participation in much of the legislative process.

Someone needs to break the logjam. Obama for the Dems could do it or McCain for the Repubs could do it, with Rudy a close second.

Any of those three could begin to get some serious compromise legislation done. Compromise is the nature of politics - a fact that the most rabid partisans on both sides of the aisle seem to ignore ... to the detriment of the country.

Rick,
I like what you say but I am afraid that your advice falls on too many deaf ears. The only thing to hope for if Obama is elected would be for the GOP senators and reps to go against the tide to establish the types of compromise you mentioned and to take a stand on being the ones that continue the sickening polarization that has defined our political scene the last 20 years.
Obama seems to have the Reagan style that makes the oppostion more willing to reach for a compromise. That is just my initial opinion about him.

One year ago I wouldn't have considered voting for Obama. While I don't know whether I could vote for him I can say the conduct of the "conservative base" has disgusted me in so many ways that I could see doing so as a protest vote. The party must come to its senses and move toward the center to be relevant.
