A ROCK, A HARD PLACE, AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

If Bush had not been in such a hurry to invade Iraq, and had kept his attention (and this country's resources) focused on Afghanistan, DEFEATING the Taliban and al-qaeda (not just running them out of town), Pakistan would have had almost no one to give sanctuary to. Bush's weakness is that he NEVER pays attention to anything that is not on his very personal agenda, until reality compels him to make an appearance and make meaningless promises (like in New Orleans, Kabul, and Baghdad, where he promised limitless resources, rebuilding, yada yada yada, and broke every promise as soon as the TV lights went out).

Bush's neglect of the pursuit and defeat of ONLY ENEMY THAT COUNTS, to pursue neo-con wet dreams of controlling Iraq and Iran, has allowed al-qaeda to reconstitute and regain its control. There is no one to blame BUT Bush for the malignant neglect of the true priority in the 'War on Terror' to pursue ideological goals elsewhere.

I agree that Musharaff is between a rock and a hard place, with no wiggle room. But if we'd done the job right in Afghanistan, he wouldn't have Taliban and al-qaeda training camps on Pakistani soil.
