This is all true, but this also (the desire to ignore history and talk our enemies to death in a fit of "Stuff White People Like" moralizing and status-mongering) requires our enemies not do anything.
Rest assured a nuclear armed Iran and crumbling, nuclear armed Pakistan will do no such thing. Each are shot through with factions that would like nothing better than to nuke NYC out of existence then demand submission to Islam in exchange for sparing DC.
Real Life resembles a mish-mash of old comic book plots, 24 villains, and such. There are hard men who shoot people for fun and profit who now have nukes.
And the cost of moralizing and prosecuting real life CIA agents (and GWB) who waterboarded Khalid Sheik Mohammed is the hunkering down of the bureaucracy to do nothing but CYA.
Dont' want Bombay or a nuke version of the same in NYC? Then closing Gitmo and prosecuting Bush officials has to be off the menu ... indulging in that will cause people to CYA and pass terrorists through. With millions of lives at stake, possibly.
