ADDENDUM: This would keep the riff-raff out. Anyone who can scrape up a thousand dollars in Mexico has to have something between the ears (well, OK, maybe a gun in his belt).

Why not tax immigrants? A thousand bucks or so at the border crossings (if they'll pay this to the Coyotes to smuggle them in, why wouldn't they pay it to the U. S. Treasury instead), and give them SS numbers and work permits on the spot. Then put a surtax on their wages (10 percent of all they earn on top of the usual taxes. Still a good deal of them). With all the extra revenue, U. S. could cut gasoline taxes (keep those SUVs a'rollin) and balance the budget,too.

Good post, Rick. Left wing bloggers and MSM seem to think Bush is fatally wounded. Even if this true (recriminations confirmed, they all cry), recriminations are still of no of no importance (except to those running for office). The only meaningful question is still the same: where do go from here?

Maybe you will agree that bringing down Bush will not make this problem go away. What would you suggest the next administration do?

You lefties can't get it through their skulls that Americans, by-and-large, do not wish to be killed (as about 3,000 of us were on 9/11). Why not propose to your Muslim brethern (we're all sons of Abraham) that they call a Koran-atutional convention and adopt an amendment to their holy book negating the passage(s) about it being OK (or is it a duty) to kill infidels. Once that is rammed through, then maybe all of us out here in middle-of-the-road land America will listen when you tell us that this war is a mistake (that the war is going badly, if it is, is not evidence it is a mistake). None of this is a George Bush or a GOP issue. If you lunatics happen to get control of the Democrat party (doubtful) and then put a latter-day Neville Chamberlain at the head of your ticket in '08, you'll be stunned at how many Americans still have images of planes crashing into the World Trade Center dancing in their heads.

Thompson has to be a really smart guy to have got out of the Senate when he did. Look at all the baggage he doesn't have to carry that all the other potential candidates (Dems and Pubs) have on their backs. And got his mug on TV at lot more than they did, too.
