MESSAGE SENT, LESSONS LEARNED

Interesting so far.

McDonnell win doesn't mean much, so the Conventional Wisdom (?) goes.

In 2008, 3 Rep congressional districts went Dem. McDonnell won those districts 55%, 60+% and 60+%.

We'll see how the "Conservatives" play their hand, in VA McDonnell is a strong conservative. The Washington Post solidified his right flank by their continual obsession of a 20+ year old thesis, so he went to the middle.

The inter Party battle will be in the Primaries (Which NY-23 DID NOT have). Crist is likely toast, Rubio should win in Fla. California could prove interesting.

Bottom Line...Remember Clinton's line..."It's the economy STUPID!"

THE ANTI-REASON CONSERVATIVES

"But above all of that, I believe in victory. And if that is not paramount in your mind, then you might as well switch parties and vote for the Democrat."

SO, DeDe would have been your preference over Hoffman?

Obviously, a conservative CANNOT win in NY-23, at least that seems to be the Party line.

Rick, I think you take alot of the rhetoric much more serious than it actually is. I see it as a whole lot of frustration. Particularly, with the Republican elites.

Conservatives are continually told that the party has to run moderates to win, so conservatives just go to the back of the bus. We want your votes, and just vote and shut up.

I have voted in 10 presidential elections. 8 times for the lesser of 2 evils and 2 times out of conviction. I have voted in elections where the conservatives sat it out, I have voted in elections where the moderates sat out OR more likely switched sides (2008). I have voted in elections where the evangelicals sat it out. Obviously the only STUPID one in this process was ME. Dumb as a rock.

So I might be a bit frustrated, particularly when Rick says go to the other side since you have no right to an opinion and are causing division and loss. So be it!

Rick, I hope those moderates get you your majority.

YES TO HOFFMAN, BUT NO LITMUS TEST PLEASE

"But once you start the process of subtraction from the party as a result of your disagreements on very few issues, there is only one way that the GOP will end up; permanent minority status with conservatives continuing to howl in the political wilderness."

First, The real question is are there ANY core principles candidates must have? Personally, fiscal responsibility is a MUST for me. Hypothetically, Should an avowed Communist somehow recieve the Republican nomination, I WILL NOT be brow beatten to support them. I WILL advocate and support fiscal conservatives who is for smaller government. ALL other issues, including some personally favored social issues, are subject to disagreements.

Second, the New York 23rd special election poses a unique set of circumstances. MOST States do not have institutionalized 3rd, 4th...parties institutionalized. For the record, Senator Buckley was elected on the Conservative Party ticket in 1970.

Third, from MOST blogs and conservative activists I have read, DO NOT advocate creating 3rd party candidates, and prefer to battle in the primary (none in this special election), and IF they cannot get the conservative to the General Election, maybe with less enthusiasm are likely to support the Republican candidate.

INSULTING THE EXPLOITED

Jon, you might be correct, yet the people who are going to be offended, are ALWAYS going to be offended when Rush's name comes up.

The interesting thing is that Rush does a RADIO show. Yes he has the "ditto cam" for his 24/7 subscribers, which I have always found interesting. I guess it appeals to alot of people who are more visually comfortable, while radio is obiously an auditory medium.

Rush mentioned that he was describing what he saw. I can understand that, as the lady of the house or I will often burst into laughter watching the other talking on the telephone, using our hands or facial expressions to get our points across to the person at the other end of the line (who CANNOT see us).

Brian,

I hope you never say something which get's snipped to make it something it is not.

And, I realize that context is nothing.

Yet, your point still stands. MJF is untouchable. No matter what he does, or what he says, he gets a pass because we all feel soooo sorry for him.

I like(ed) MJF, contributed to Parkinsons research due to his condition and the attention it brought to the disease. My grandfather had Parkinsons. He died 35+ years ago when I was a teenager. I do not know how much the Parkinsons had with his death because he was 76 when he died.

I understand why MJF did what he did, and if he was just doing a Public Service Announcement, no arguement from me. Yet, That's not what MJF did, he entered the political arena and his message is that If you vote for Jim Tallent, and today here in Maryland, if you vote for Michael Steele, you are for causing suffering and against cures for diseases.

Brian, you and MJF can charge me with that, and apparently I DO NOT have the right to call you on it.

Well, the Democrats have found a winner in 2008. None other than Michael J. Fox (I'm sure his Canadian birth can be overlooked).

If you disagree with him, well that's not allowed. You say he is constitutionally challenged bue to birth, his disability trumps that.

I learn something every day.

LOUDER PLEASE...THE CRICKETS ARE CHIRPING

Quite interesting thread.

Rick, While it would be nice to read some condemnation from the left, I am not sure that their silence proves unexpected. Rather, the more damning actions are the justifications.

As to flame wars, I have been in a few in my day, and acted less than adult in some instances, yet I CANNOT concieve of a reason to hauling children into the act. Maybe I'm just not as enlightened as our friends.

Politics ain't beanbag. Used to be a day where the politicians would wage verbal battle by day and drink together by night. That was a long time ago. Perspective, is long gone, particularly on the internet, where one only has a keyboard and doesn't have to "face" ones opponent.

I might say, given a choice, flying a plane into the NY Times building would have been a better result on 9/11, yet if that choice were actually taken, my reaction would not have been different. Even though I find little of substance or value to reside there, they are like me Americans, and if they were attacked, we all would have all been attacked. I do wish that there was a little kinship comming from the other side. Well you can't have everything.

COUNTDOWN TO GERMANY: TEAM USA

Rick,

I probably have to come down closer to your point of view, than Paul's.

As you both stated, it is a very tough Group. Yet, 5 pts (with goal difference) or 6 pts could/should win this Group. One can easily envision draws in the 3 games among Czech Republic, Italy and the US. That puts Ghana as the King maker. How each team does against Ghana may well tell the tale.

I have followed Bruce Arena since he was coaching at the Univ of Virginia, then DC United. One thing that the US team will have over most opponents is "team". In this type of competition, where you have a collection of country All-Stars, "team" play can be just the advantage needed to move on. Also, "team" play is a hallmark of Bruce Arena's coaching style.

While I find the FIFA rankings interesting, 3 of the top 5, Czech Republic, Holland and the US, were not even #1 seeds. What does that mean regarding the rankings? Who knows.

Now for a bit of rocket Science. For the US, the Czech game may be everything. A win or draw, bodes well for the US, a loss will be close to elimination. The layout of the games may work to the US advantage in that we at least theoretically, get the easiest opponent last. I like the fact that Bruce Arena has the time and ability to prepare most for the Czech Republic.

The Italy game should be a 1 goal affair. When Italy plays in World Cup or European Cup competitions, I bet correct score 0-0,1-0,0-1,1-1. Usually shows a tidy profit.

Prognostication Hat on: Czech-US = draw, Italy-US = draw, Ghana-US = win. This may be enough to win the Group, or at least go through to the Round of 16.

Italy 2-Ghana 0
Czech Republic 1 - USA 1
Czech Repubilc 4 - Ghana 1
Italy 1 - USA 1
Czech Republic 1- Italy 1
Ghana 1 - USA 3

Czech Republic, Italy and USA all on 5 pts, Czech Republic and USA go through on goal differential.

In a week and a few hours, we will have a pretty good understanding of how World Cup 2006 will turn out for the US.
