IS THE GOP ANTI-SCIENCE? OR JUST ANTI-RATIONALIST?

This post -- and no doubt the comments to come -- kind of founder on an overly broad definition of science in the context of conservative Republican heterodoxy.

While SDI and nuclear power are "science," they are not "science" like stem-cell research, environmental research and medical marijuana research to pick three examples kind of at random.

In the cases of these three examples, the Bush administration abandoned scientific rigor in order to, as it did in so many instances, pander to the views of its political base.

In these instances it was the kids in charge who decided for themselves.

Wrong about stem cells. Adult stem cells had no problem getting funded during the Bush administration. And they were the first to authorize embryonic stem cell research. You disagree with the medical ethicists who recommended that only the existing lines of embryonic stem cells be used. Fine. This is a question of ethics, not politics.

To make the broad claim that Bush opposed funding for stem cells is not only wrong, it's repeating a lie, a talking point, a mindless partisan bromide with no basis in fact and deliberately used to paint the GOP as anti-science.

And you failed to make note of teh massive increases in basic research funds, doubling NIH monies for instance. Your science friendly president is CUTTING those funds. Who's on the side of rationalism now?

ed.

WHEN REALITY, INTENT, AND WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY DON'T MATTER

Rick, you absolutely must upgrade to digital TV before the June conversion deadline because you obviously are missing the Republican talking point-heavy guest list on cable.

If the HuffPo was one of many outlets that make up a great authoritarian pushback against those who dare smite Obama in print, I'd say we do indeed have a problem.

But you are making a problem where none exists, and the only slide I detect is your own standards in using a crapoid NYPost cartoon to carry your water.

This post gets a "D."

IS THE RIGHT READY TO RETURN TO POWER?

Sara My Dear:

Time to get your eyeglass prescription strenthen. Who was Manning talking about when he/she wrote:

"Liberals have been singing their laissez faire, hedonistic and anti-American song for the same 50 years, raising the ideas of the communist and socialist parties of the past with new verbiage, new financing, and new power. Progressives of today were spawned by those discredited ideologies, and are enchanted by the idea of a new international order. The attack on our moral fiber, the diminution of marriage, the sanctity of life, the explosion of porn, and the fact that 60% of our children are now born into a single-parent household, speaks to the, perhaps unintentional—perhaps not—, net effect of liberal consequences on the public. Look to the program of the ACLU for proof."

So I can assume that you, like Manning, are smugly happy with the state of conservatism and the GOP? That CPAC is just the ticket for you? That you didn't learn squat from what happened on November 4?

In asserting that liberals are anti-American, Manning sums up in a scant (and ignorant) few words exactly why the Republican Party has become so marginalized.

I am a liberal who fought in a war for my country, would bleed red, white and blue for my country whenever required, but I am an anti-American by Manning's calculus because my political views differ from his/hers.

Another sad lapel-pin Republican patriot. It is Manning who is trapped in the right-wing echo chamber, and worst yet has learned nothing from the recent past.

A terrific post, and the last two paragraphs should be required reading for Republicans who are looking for a glimmer of hope for the party to find its way out of the wilderness.

There are contradictions in any school of political philosophy and conservatism is no exception. I do not believe for a moment that conservatism has been discredited, but rather hijacked.

As long as people like Robert Stacy McCain and Rush Limbaugh dominate the discourse -- and that they see the Republican Party's re-emergence as being predicated on the further collapse of an economy bankrupted by the policies of the biggest discredited conservative of all -- the party's time in the wilderness will be very, very long.

NHL'S WINTER CLASSIC ONE FOR THE BOOKS

The reason that NHL hockey never caught on with me is simple:

While I look forward to the Winter Olympics and the men and women's hockey tournaments because of the beautiful play, pro hockey is too reminiscent of pro wrestling -- a lot of faux grunting, groaning and punching.

Made worse is the fact that many fans relish these distractions.

BLOODTHIRSTY JEWS BRUTALLY MURDER HAMAS BABIES

I state unequivocally that I would sacrifice my life to defend my Jewish brothers and sisters. (Yes, I am half Jewish.) That noted, let's add a couple talking points to the discussion: What was Israel thinking in expanding settlements into the Occupied Territories? And more recently blockading Gaza for the past year, which is an act of war plain and simple?

The next several days will follow an all-too-familiar pattern of pointless finger pointing and messages sent but not received: Arab states will pile on Israel. Washington and a few other Western government will rush to Israel's defense. The price of oil will spike. The radical Palestinian leadership will bury their dead but determinedly not learn from the errors of their ways while their people sink deeper into poverty and hopelessness.

And the Israelis, who long ago squandered their moral superiority by building settlements in the Occupied Territories while oppressing the Palestinian people, will revel over their big dicked but small-minded chest thumping.

ILLINOIS GOVERNOR ARRESTED TRYING TO SELL OBAMA'S SENATE SEAT

Dear Jim:

Put away your broad brush. Obama IS mentioned in the indictment and by Fitzgerald at his presser, as well.

Pertinent quote: "In a conversation with Harris on November 11, the charges state, Blagojevich said he knew that the President-elect wanted Senate Candidate 1 for the open seat but 'they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. [Expletive] them.' "
