No need to be defensive. Illinois may very well have it's share of shady pols, but believe me, it doesn't hold a candle to my state, the Republic of Texas. The home of "Landslide Lyndon" and other politicians of that ilk takes a back seat to no one. Oh, Louisiana has tried, Michigan had a good run, and Illinois is in the news right now. But they are all imposters to the throne. I will not attempt to list the many fraudulent elections, complete with newly-found ballots, we have had here. Nor will I even half-heartedly try to list the names of all the crooks, liars,cheats and sorry-a## folks who have run or been elected to office here in Texas. Suffice it to say, we've had our share, and then some, brother.
So forget about the claim that Illinois is the worst. Here in Texas, everything is bigger, including our crooked politicians. We own the title, we fought for it, we cheated for it, and by God, it's ours.

I have run to the mailbox every day since election day, but still no check from the government to make my house payment for me. Checked my gasoline credit card, every charge was still on it. Guess someone found out I did not vote for Obama.I am not behind on my house payment, and not under water yet, and since I live in Texas, probably won't be except in the case of a depression, then we really all are in the same boat.
I guess I am in a minority around here, since I was originally for TARP because I have been in and out of the stock market for years, I read constantly about stocks and bonds, and have many friends in the financial industry, and I truly believe that the market was set for a free fall much, much worse than what we have seen so far, and much more rapidly than what we have experienced, if something wasn't done.
However, as I began to learn more and more about the freaking mess the financial sector was in as a result of the quantum theory financial wizards uses of CDOs, swaps, insurance backed securities, and the fact that the ratings agencies joined in the game like a bunch of conventioneers chasing a two dollar hooker, I realized that the toxic debt buying scheme was not going to work. The fact is, Paulson panicked, and made some risky, and now foreseeable, assumptions. One of the biggest, and dumbest, was that he could place a value on the toxic assets. Since the banks still continue to avoid transparency at all costs, and because it would take a character smarter than the one in Good Will Hunting to figure out what is what, there is simply no way to determine what those assets are worth, and more importantly, what should be paid for them.
Subsequently, he promptly over-paid for what he got by injecting money into the banks. And forgot, purposely or innocently, to remember to place a sufficiently dragonian policy on the banks to begin lending the money, instead of hoarding it.
Now, we have companies like American Express, with very little exposure directly to the sub-prime/no doc liars loan mess, deciding they want to be banks for the sole purpose of sticking their heads into the public trough. When they get the money, they need to change their name to American's Express. Or better yet, America's Mess.

I have been considering the same things you talk about in your post. I have been a conservative for 40 years. My parents were strongly conservative, especially my mom, who was smart, self-educated, and loved politics. So I come by it honestly (the politics part, I failed to inherit her intellect.) I, too, wonder what is going to become of a movement and a philosophy that seems to be contracting ever smaller. When the percentage of people in this country who pay little or no tax becomes larger than the percentage of people who do, how can conservative thought grow. People seem to be demanding more and more of a government that is less and less able to provide what they demand.
And I will be glad to see this administration gone, as I have grown ever wearier of the constant blathering, mostly stupid attacks. Unlike many, I think Bush is a good guy, but I never believed he was truly a fiscal conservative, especially as I watched him govern my state, and more especially as he has been POTUS. Conservatism must find new ways to attract people to it, and to find those new ways, examination of our principles and the way we espouse those principles to people must be undertaken. Self-examination can be an unpleasant experience, but a necessary one. I can't say I look forward to the process, but I'm willing.

Pennsylvannia is done. Ohio and Florida, who knows. One thing to note, however, is that the voters The Messiah is counting on heavily to turn out in record numbers, are so far not happening. Youth vote and Hispanic vote in early voting is not occurring at the rate predicted, in spite of Obama pleas to vote early and often.
And one other thing: How in the heck is McCain even within 10 or 20 points? The economy, Bush's ratings, obama's incredible spending and money raising, by all rights, he ought to be 15 points ahead, at least. Very surprising, at least to me, that he isn't killing McCain in the polls at this point. Of course, as Kerry and Algore will tell you, the electoral vote is what counts.Same thing happened with Reagan in 80. He and Carter were close until the debate (less than a week before the election) and then that last weekend Reagan zoomed ahead and crushed him. People still don't know Obama and are leery of him. With Reagan, he went on that debate and simply presented himself as a rational alternative to disaster. It worked.
I still think that could happen - especially after the Messiah's speech tonight. Still a few fence sitters but mostly, people want an excuse to vote for Obama. He will give it to them tonight.

Rick, I am not here too often, but every time I get here, you have something to say that I actually have to think about before I comment. I don't always agree with you, but I have never found your opinions to be nonsensical, or boring. And every once in a while, you write something so unexpected that I have to read it a couple of times to make sure I understand what you are saying. I like that in a blogger. Congrats on four years, and God bless you and your family.

Yeah, well, I don't recall huge groups of people in government giving a crap in the early eighties when our economy (and oil prices)here in Texas went into the dumper. Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio have high taxes, treat lots of business as a tax base to be abused, and have horrible weather. They also have some great, smart people in them who are perfectly capable of turning this thing around if given the right opportunity. Thomas Jackson (3) above has it right.

I work every d**n day, and so does my wife, to make sure I pay my mortgage payment before anything else. Now I get to pay for those dummies who couldn't figure out that they could not afford a 5,000 dollar a month mortage on 4,500 a month income? And I am being forced to bail out the mortgage brokers and mortgage lenders who gave the loan to them? You think the people in the rust belt are p****d, you better know I am.
Graham is not my favorite person, but he is sure right about one thing, there are an awful lot of people whining for the government to bail them out of the mess they got themselves into. Stupid and insensitive remarks? More like the truth, brother. Which is exactly what most of the whiners don't want to hear.
Guess we disagree about this, R., but I still like your stuff.
Yeah, Barry, that's right. We conservatives are just too stupid to think for ourselves. Whatever O'Reilly et al say is gospel to us. After all, if it works for liberals and Moveon org., why not for us?
