GEORGIA ON MY MIND

We aren't going to do anything. We can't realistically do anything. Which is why Obama wants to take it to the UN: the UN is where you go when you know damned well nothing will be done.

McCain's bellicosity is ridiculous. Putin knows we won't do anything. So all McCain is doing is blustering. He's acting like a loudmouth blog commenter while wrapping himself in presidential stagecraft.

If anyone has disqualified himself in this 3 am situation, it's McCain.

USING RIDICULE AS A WEAPON COULD BACKFIRE ON McCAIN

McCain is hurting himself more than Obama.

I'm a potential swing voter. I was happy to have two capable candidates. It seemed like an insurance policy -- if one imploded, okay, I had the other. The country would be okay. Although I support Obama I've often admitted I'd be perfectly confident if McCain won.

No longer.

McCain's inability to make a case for himself, his incoherence, his chaotic and unfocused campaign, idiotic tire guage sidebars, and now this pitiful Rove-ian transformation of the former straight-talker has left me convinced that a McCain presidency would be a disaster.

He was my political back-up. No longer. Now I worry about him. Which leaves Obama very nearly bulletproof.

THE 'DARK SIDE' OF HELL

I have been shocked by conservative support for torture. I thought that at very least there were a few things upon which liberals and conservatives could agree, certain limits, certain core beliefs. In fact as an American I rely on conservatives to balance and restrain our statist tendencies.

I never expected that American conservatives would demonstrate this utter moral vacuity. It is shameful. This is love of country? What country?

SHADES OF 1936

I think you're right, Rick, and I'm ashamed of myself for not really thinking about it much before this.

ON BEING CALLED A 'RACIST'

. . .my curmudgeonly moods . . .

You're implying there are times when you're not curmudgeonly?

I think there are two sides to this issue. Yes, the Left throws down the racist accusation far too often. No question. But the Right too often pretends that race is a matter that is entirely in the past, no longer an issue.

The negative hits on Congressman Harold Ford were coded racist attacks. I didn't see a lot of conservatives admitting that. This McCain attack ad is not racist, coded or otherwise. It's juvenile, silly and self-defeating, but I don't think it's coded racism.

If we're going to have an honest discussion then the Right will have to admit -- as many do -- that the GOP has used racist attacks in the past, that they reaped political profit from racism, particularly in the Nixon era. Conservatives can't pretend their hands are entirely clean and demand that the Left unilaterally disarm.

I'm not exactly a Leftie myself, but I have no problem admitting that the Left uses race as a bludgeon. Will those on the Right admit that the Southern Strategy and its political sequelae were racist?

McCAIN CAMPAIGN STILL FOUNDERING

McCain's inability to get his campaign together undercuts his message of executive competence. If he can't run a campaign -- and he went bankrupt in the primaries before getting to this new level of weird -- how can he run a superpower?

Obama's put together a machine that rolled over the Clintons. He came from nowhere to beat the establishment. McCain started far out ahead and barely beat a guy who thinks the Flintstones was a documentary. Seriously, if you owned, let's say a Silicon Valley start-up, and you were looking for a CEO, which of these two would you hire? For that matter, if you owned a Dodge dealership.

OIL AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CAN REDEFINE THE RACE

McCain barely has a prayer. No one gives a damn about affirmative action. And the drilling thing is a sideshow. It's not nothing, but it is a second tier issue.

It's going to be an "economy stupid" election. And on that issue McCain really is just another doctrinaire Republican.

McCain is a guy with nearly 100% name recognition who can't break 45%. And his campaign is apparently being run as a sort of extended Borat routine.

OBAMA WOWS THE GERMANS. BUT WILL IT PLAY IN STREATOR, IL?

Santa Claus is still permitted to deliver seasonal gifts however.

And in crazy town where you live you figure Santa shows up at Easter? And this proves Obama's a Muslim?

I never know with guys like you. Are you mentally ill so I should pity you and avoid engaging you? Or are you just a garden variety nitwit? Help me out: crazy or stupid?

Dale:

You misquoted your own link. The article says Santa Claus is still allowed to deliver presents.

You do know that Santa Claus is really . . . oh, wait, I don't want to be the one to tell you.

He was looking to cross a threshold of plausibility as commander in chief. He did that. He looked the part and Sarkozy treated him as though he already had the part.

Bonus points for campaign ad footage.

And extra bonus points for making the McCain campaign look pitiful. Honest to God, how did McCain not know that he should have a big domestic issues push loaded up? And who lets the man stand in front of the cheese counter? Is there a Democratic mole running his campaign?
