IS AIG BLACKMAILING THE GOVERNMENT OVER BONUSES?

I think Congressman Ackerman may have suggested much the same thing. (Caveat: half-heard Chris Matthews interview while my kids squabbled.) I did hear all of Pat Buchanan's response afterward and he seemed to be taking the accusations seriously. (Caveat: Buchanan is about half nuts.)

I thought Liddy made a fairly compelling case that as ridiculous as this situation is, we need to keep these AIG employees to pick through their own debris.

By the way: it's just not a good idea to watch a House committee at work. That way lies despair.

BRING BACK THE STOCKS!

So the Republicans -- Bush and Paulson -- who actually demanded the TARP funds, and demanded this complete lack of accountability because gosh there was just no time -- they don't make the list. No, Maxine Waters is responsible.

Yeah. We're going to buy that.

I like the idea of public stocks. So here's a thought: let's put Phil Gramm in there and Alan Greenspan and President Bush and Hank Paulson. Absolutely some Democrats, too, but your list, Rick, is utter partisan b.s.

A LETTER TO THE TIMES ON BOB HERBERT'S COLUMN PUSHING A THIRD AIRPORT FOR CHICAGOLAND

I hate to admit it but I kind of like O'Hare, at least the American Airlines portion I usually use. The AA lounge is fine, the food in the terminal isn't awful by airport standards -- you can get a real Chicago dog with the necessary sport peppers and radioactive relish. The shopping is pitiful compared to some airports but honest-to-God who really buys a suit or diamonds at an airport?

The problem with O'Hare is most often weather, which Peotone will do nothing to improve.

HOW RADICAL IS BARACK OBAMA?

John:

So you can't answer the question, either. Interesting.

Okay, I read your piece carefully and I still have no idea what the hell you're talking about. What transformation? The notion that government might actually be made competent? That's what has your knickers in a twist? You prefer more incompetent government? Like the ones that got us here in the first place?

You acknowledge that moving from a 35% rate to a 40% top rate isn't exactly Bolshevism. And you seem to admit that Obama's health reforms aren't Maoism run amuck. Or even Frogism. So what, specifically, are you talking about? Because I don't see anything remotely radical or transformational going on here.

Unless you are upset by the fact that business has screwed the pooch and is now being rescued by government. And if that's your main gripe, then how is that Obama's fault alone? Aren't you blaming the fire department for getting the burning house all wet? Isn't the fault here with the banks and their politician-enablers? Are you seriously arguing that we should let the economy spiral ever downward because a depression is preferable to competent government?

THE CARTERIZATION OF OBAMA

Fly Man:

I'm hoping for Bolshevik. It's such a great word.

Or they could go totally Dada and pick something off-the-wall like Florist, or Car Detailer. You know, something that would really have us all scratching our chins.

John Howard:

You're like a newborn who, having pooped his diaper, cries furiously that Mommy hasn't cleaned it up quickly enough. But then Republicans are a juvenile bunch.

Lionheart:

Not to be too ruthlessly self-interested here, but I'm long on cash, so Dow 4000 would be swell for me. And I need to buy a house, too, so . . .
