NOT A MISPRINT: OBAMA SEEKS CUTS OF 100 MILLION TO CURB DEFICIT

Travis:

It never fails. The GOP is never to blame.

Here's how it works:

1) The years immediately following a Democratic president are the fault of the Democrats.

2) The years immediately following a Republican president are the fault of Democrats.

3) The years in the middle? The fault of Democrats.

4) When the GOP has both the White House and the Congress it's the fault of the Democrats for having any vote at all.

5) If the Democratic party ceased to exist it would still be the fault of the Democrats because of the media.

Conclusion: It is never, ever the fault of Republicans. Because, after all, they are the party of restraint and responsibility.

In other news, after an exhaustive diet I've lost two ounces. All better now!

Yeah, this is silly.

INDEFENSIBLE: OBAMA FAILS HIS FIRST BIG TEST

Yeah, Right:

I did support Obama, who has behaved precisely as I thought he would. Unlike many people, I actually paid attention to what he was saying. And I think I accurately guessed who and what he is. I'm not responsible for either right-wing hysterics who completely mis-read him, (and continue to do so,) or left-wing ninnies who did the same.

Obama's Iraq plan has the consensus support of pretty much the entire foreign policy establishment. His Af-Pak strategy has the support of even Mr. McCain.

His Iran approach is smart, his Cuba opening is smart, and his refusal to be baited by tinhorn thugs like Chavez and Ortega is wise. As was his handling of the torture issue.

I voted for Obama and I am extremely glad I did.

Yeah Right:

You mean like the Manufactured Outrage over….
Torture (It’ll be just fine when O! does it, and he will, trust me)
Patriot Act (Gosh, the left has been silent over that one since 1/20/09. How odd.)
The “wars of aggression” in Iraq and Afghanistan (I must have missed the big protests of Obama’s unmanned drone escapade into Pakistan)

1) Torture will not be okay if Obama does it.
2) I don't think I ever even wrote about the Patriot Act other than to suggest that if we needed surveillance we should do it under color of law.
3) I supported both wars. In fact, I was pushing for more forces in Iraq long before McCain.
4) Not only do I support Predator strikes in Pakistan I did so when the objection to it was coming from right wingers who claimed it showed Obama was reckless.

But by all means, keep flailing away at straw men.

THE CONSERVATIVE CASE FOR GAY MARRIAGE

CDOR:

Not for long they won't. The tipping point on gay marriage is not far in the future.

Your central premise is wrong: the old don't dictate terms to the young. Note Google, stem cells, Twitter, fashion and entertainment and the election of Barack Obama. It's a two-way street.

You, my friend, will live in a world where a man can marry a man. Unless you're planning on checking out really soon. In the meantime, you might want to stay out of Massachusetts, Vermont, Iowa . . . and more to come.

Don:

Rick is right: it's marginalizing. Not today, but going forward. Like when in 1968 Nixon courted white southerners with the southern strategy. The GOP categorically lost the African-American vote. I'd argue that the GOP's subsequent alienation of the Hispanic vote flowed from that same strategy and from the constituencies it attracted.

Short-term gain in solidifying the south for the GOP morphed into a long-term liability.

Read the polls now and what you see on gay marriage is very stark: the dividing line is age. Old people against it, young people for it. It's one of the reasons you lost ground among the young and will no more easily get it back than you'll get back the black vote.

The GOP is down to 25%. An old, white, rural 25%. You're ceding young, black, Hispanic and increasingly, the well-educated. Old, white and rural is not a growing demographic group: it's a sinking ship.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

Don C:
You seem very, very concerned with "feminization."

You may want to talk to your doctor. A drop in testosterone can be a sign of a serious illness, or it may just be a consequence of age. In any event there are treatments available.

Dan C:

It is absurd on its face to say that anyone can "volunteer" for torture.

It's like saying someone "volunteers" for Russian Roulette. Except that they're told in advance that the bullet is a blank. And that they can end it at any time with a safe word. And the people inflicting the "torture" are their fellow soldiers not the enemy.

That's not torture. That's training.

Michael:

These were not Jack Bauer moments. There was no ticking time bomb.

The logic you apply could apply in every case: we have a drug dealer, if we don't shoot him in the head he goes free, sells crack to your baby sister and she ends up dead. How can we afford not to shoot the dealer?

Why not execute drunk drivers? Why not exterminate all potential criminals, all potential enemies because any or all of them might do something heinous?

This is why we have a system of laws and rights.
