THE HOPELESS BANALITY OF THE BLOGOSPHERE

He attempted to contact Al Qaeda. He told his neighbor “I’m going to do good work for God.” He attended a militant Islamic mosque. He praised suicide bombers as being the equivalent of heros that die SAVING other people. Oh yeah, he killed 12 people while shouting God is great.

Are you ready to call him a terrorist yet? How much more proof do you need?

You know Rick, sometimes a person is not a partisan racist when they draw conclusions based on stereotypes and empirical evidence. It seems like the world is much too worried about offending every identity group from homosexuals to Muslims.

In the end, when something walks and quacks like a duck, it's almost always a duck, and it doesn't make you wrong to state the obvious, even if you're wrong. Of course, this time, nobody was.

He was clearly, at a minimum, a Islamic terrorist sympathizer (assuming the anecdotal comments from co-workers is true). There is a grand leap from sympathizing with a cause to actually committing the crime. I hate child predators, and sympathize with a parent cutting off the perp's balls. But for me to actually go slash somebody's privates would probably indicates a diseased mind.

An open question: what would be the defining evidence that it was a terrorist attack? Collusion with others? Detailed plans? A homemade video intended to be viewed after his death?

YES TO HOFFMAN, BUT NO LITMUS TEST PLEASE

Scozzfava's few conservative leanings are just as likely the result of her understanding the makeup of the constituancy rather than true convictions. Her 2nd amendment stance if VERY likely a "deal with the devil", so to speak, ensuring NRA support and funding. Her position on ACORN? You would have to be an idiot to claim that you wouldn't defund them after all that has come out. Tax cuts and opposition to cap and tax? The district votes very conservative, and claiming support for these is easy to do, since there is nothing to prove otherwise.

On the other hand, it is pretty hard to hide support for card check, unions, abortion on demand, and gay marriage, with all the statements and engagements she has made during her career. Her true colors are liberal, perhaps radical. I think Michelle is closer to being correct in her assessment that you are.

THE DIFFERENT REALITY INHABITED BY THE CONSERVATIVE BASE

Michael,

delusional people don’t know they’re delusional

Good quote, but sadly for you, it applies to you as much as to everybody else.

I personally don't think you're deluded, just wrong. I've never really debated an issue with you, or anybody else on this blog. I've certainly posted my opinion on some things, but never in a debate forum. As far as debating you (or being "destroyed everytime I open my mouth), I believe I can best the recitation of the daily democratic talking points, which is about the best I've seen you do- your original thoughts are neither insightful nor profound.

Didn't you go away? Did you get over your temper tantrum?

I can't believe I just wasted 2 minutes responding to you.

Just because the conservative base is in the minority, doesn't mean that they aren't right. What if they are?

Dismiss them as loons if you please. It is just as likely that you are the one that is wrong.

Every religion thinks they have the one true path to eternal life. So it is in politics... the only difference is that religions all go back to faith, whereas politics can be debated with facts, figures and comparisons and analogies with historical events.

I have never seen a good debate, between two knowledgeable parties, where the conservative, "paranoid" point of view has been destroyed. I've seen plenty where the naive liberal has been destroyed by the educated conservative. Facts beat feelings every time in a debate.

The momentum of the current political climate bears this out. Perhaps this current minority is becoming more mainstream. Or maybe it already is, but is still silent. Time will tell... perhaps in 2010?

WHY IS THE PRESIDENT GOING TO COPENHAGEN TO LOBBY FOR THE OLYMPICS?

Does anybody know the over/under bet on the murder count of tourists who accidentally wander down to the south side during the Olympics? If it's 4, I'll take over, if 6, I'll take under.

Unless they quarantine the south side, sort of like "Escape from New York". Except it's Chicago.

Or lift the gun ban, so its not only the crooks that have them.

GET READY FOR 'HOUSING MELTDOWN: THE SEQUEL'

Chuck said

It might have slipped by you, but the Dems had about an eight year hiatus from running much of anything recently. Did you mean Republicans?

They're all douchebags, and the entire Congress should be turned over.

MY BELOVEDS FACE THEIR URLACHERLESS FUTURE

Congratulations, Rick. I see Ed tipped his hat to you and to Cutler's performance over at HA.

I don't think it would have been so close if the Bear's receivers could catch. I saw a lot of dropped passes.

Best of luck, Rick. My wife and I are pulling for "da Bears".

Urlacher is a huge loss, but I think Cutler's ability will help them win more than 6... I'll bet they win at least 8.

Of course, I just watched Davis (Chicago #87) drop 2 passes, so maybe you're right.

NO WONDER BUSH WAS A FAILURE AS PRESIDENT

Excellent post, Rick. I would like to add my experience and reasons for being taken in by the man. First, Bush masked his liberal fiscal policy by his conservative stance on abortion and gun-rights. Sadly, there is a HUGE base of conservatives that vote solely on a candidate's position on one or both of these issues. I am not one of them, but in the general election, he was my only option. Second, 9/11 drew all of us (R's and D's) together against a common enemy. Sure, we were spending like drunken sailors, but we were at war, which swamped the other deficit spending. Third, I was terribly uneducated on the impact of the Medicare -D plan, and the unsustainability of it. Fourth, the unfairness of the media towards him invoked my sympathy (and concommitant support). There are other reasons, but those are the main ones, for what it's worth.
