Just wanted to compliment you on the brilliance of "Kill the Messenger"- a challenging and thought-provoking piece.

THE CHASM BETWEEN US

There is undeniably a great chasm between the right and the left on many issues (esp. on the inernet), but there remains a groundswell of quiet, non-idelogical moderates who intuitively understand that Ahmadinejad has forfeited his right to waltz into Ground Zero and grandstand because, among other things, he's threatened genocide, denied the Holocaust and provided aid to our Iraqi opponents.

MALKIN'S CRITICS: APPALLING INCIVILITY

...morbidly fascinated with America's faults without any reasonable perspective on our past and present politics" Amen, brother. I wish I had written that.

Random thoughts. With no intent to offend you, I'm surprised Michelle allows comments, as she has, in the past, received unspeakably racist and sexist comments from leftist readers. Second, she's friends with Bill Scher of Liberal Oasis (old college buddies). I watched a most enjoyable discussion with those two on a "Hot Air" vlog- she was civil, witty and accomodating. I've watched "Hot Air" videos enough to know that's she's quirky, funny, and provocative. Geraldo needs to chill.

IS THE UNITED STATES AN IMPERIALIST POWER AND DOES IT MATTER?

If one ignores the historical paradigm of imperialist countries (Rome, England, Japan, Germany) and redefines the term to mean 'big, powerful and influential', then we fit the bill. And, of course, the label ushers in a plethora of negative subtexts- arrogant, bully, dominant, militaristic. As suggested by manning (#7), we have the capability to be an imperialistic nation. But by historical measures, we're imperialistic underachievers.

ABOUT THAT COMMENT REGISTRATION...

Fantastic, Rick. But I beg you, no WordPress. Somehow it's my log-in kryptonite.

CONSERVATIVES TO BUSH: "KEEP YOUR GRUBBY PAWS OUT OF OUR PRIVATE SPACES!"

Harlan is a relatively unknown jurisprudential treasure. When I was in college, professors adored J. Douglas. As I plowed through Supreme Court decisions, I realized that Harlan was an incisive, brilliant thinker and a clear writer- a justice who worked within the constraints of the constitution. It's nice to hear you singing his praises, Rick- well deserved indeed.

BLOGS MISSING THE REAL STORY AS USUAL

As Bithead suggests, blogs are reactive, often little more than individual editorial pages. This is partly why blogs are still dependent upon original news sources, which continue to cut back due to costs and, ironically, lack of sales due to net competition. TMV's Joe Gandleman has promoted the idea of blogs are original news sources, usually interviews. (Now that I think about it, that's something you and Ed have done with Blog Radio). Anyway, Bit's right- blogs' reactivity helps explain the "piling on" phenomenon, even though I agree with you that moderation in this instance is appropriately exercised.

MEDIA ALERT

You hit the bigtime, Rick- FoxNews in primetime on O'Reilly's show- you, Michelle, Juan Williams- nationwide. Wow- and from such humble beginnings. I could still detect the Chicago accent- expected you to mutter "Da Bears" at any moment (but it never happened). Again, nicely done- congratulations.

A SHORT POST ABOUT GRASPING AT STRAWS

I like it, Rick, that you resist the temptation to wishful think and deal with facts, no matter how much you wish things were otherwise. Your assessments are grounded in reality, not faint hope. This brand of straight-shooting realism keeps me tuned in as a regular reader. To me, it's the essence of conservatism-realistically assessing people and events rather than hoping for things unseen.
