THOMPSON GOES "ALL IN" FOR IOWA CAUCUSES

Thompson's the GOP package except for one thing- his energy level is at 1 (out of 11 using the Spinal Tap scale). When Sominex is your corporate sponsor, you need to rethink your campaign.

Love the last paragrpah of #7. Nothing worse than getting a whoopin' behind the Moran woodshed. Ouch.

CIA DESTROYS TORTURE TAPES

Spot on, Rick. This isn't rocket science- as you said, "it is wrong and will come back to haunt us." Especially enjoyed the 'slide the beer' comment at #55, the 'you deserve better commenters' observation at #30, and Dan's 'principled conservative' hat tip at #38.

COMMENTS REOPENED - CONDITIONALLY

At least I've learned from the past that the anger passes, you'lll relent and reopen up the comments. There are those of us who think you do outstanding work and enjoy telling you that. Understand the frustration though- if only you could reach through that computer monitor...

BUCHANAN'S NEW BOOK: "PREPARE YE FOR THE END"

Agree with your assessment of Buchannan as a radical. But kindly explain how he manages to garner so much face-time on cable news. Cable networks love this guy as a color commentator (no pun intended). What am I missing, Rick? How does he pass for a reasoned voice?

OVERSELLING SUCCESS IN IRAQ

Rick, spot on. Sadly, it's virtually impossible to win a war when you can't identify your friends and foes. Routing out al Qaeda is a good thing, but after that, the conflict morphs into various forms of the Sunni/Shiite virus. Patreaus' performance has been incredible. But in the end, the stated goal- a stable, democratic Iraq that is our ally in the WOT- isn't likely. What we really want is #3- an ally in the WOT- and that's still very remote.

THE TRIUMPH OF THE PARANOID LEFT

The good news (?) is that this isn't just an American issue. Gallup reported a few years back that 80% those polled in 6 Arab countries believed that 9/11 was a set-up by Israeli intelligence. So it's a mistake to think that uninformed, misguided paranoia is a uniquely American problem. Now I feel so much better.

Sorry to say but it's really not surprising. It's a strange confluence of insouciance, cynicism, laziness and pride- it's staggering. Facts and reason be damned- it's as unscientific as believing the Earth is 6,000 years old. What's odd is that we have more knowledge at our fingertips than at any point in history. Yet somehow, the reptilian brain holds firm, clinging to the dark shadows of fear and paranoia.

You're right to be concerned by this dark, anti-scientific trend. It flies in the face of classic liberalism, and is most disturbing trend. Maybe it's just easier than thinking.

SEVERE CRACKDOWN BY MUSHARRAF: DEMOCRACY HOPES FADE (UPDATE: MUSHARRAF SPEAKS)

Of course the left is blaming GWB for Pakistan- everything's his fault, isn't it? You correctly note that Pakistan's nukes are secure for the moment. One of the reasons that I'm for negotiating with the heretofore intransigent Iran is because, eventually, it will only be one of several powers in that region that will develop nukes- including (potentially) a radical Islamic regime in Pakistan. As tempting as it is to strike, we'll be unable to surgically remove or retard the growth of nukes over the next decade or two. So we may as well try to construct diplomatic answers to these knotty questions now.

HILLARY'S "CLINTONESQUE" MOMENT

If Hillary loses any ground because of this flap I'll be shocked. Bingo. Much ado about nothing. Get the band ready to play Hail to the Chief.
