THAT SINKING FEELING

Rick- you predicted many moons ago that the Obama campaign bore a strong resemblance to Reagan in 1980. And that prediction preceded the subprime debacle and high gas prices, as I recall. You were spot on. Give yourself some credit in the seer department.

OBAMA: NOWHERE TO HIDE ON IRAQ

Obama was opposed to the Surge before he was for it. Or something like that.

McCain and Obama owe their nominations in large part to their Iraq War stances. With the surge's success, Iraq has moved down the list of important issue- and has been replaced by escalating pump prices. Neither candidate is well equipped to handle energy policy. Oops.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

I well remember Jack's Master's win at 45. Never much of a Jack fan- though his 18 major wins established him as the world's best golfer. Hard to believe that Rocco's 45- Jack seemed to much older at the same age. Poor Rocco- can't help but like the guy (a lot), even if his first name sounds like a pooch ('here Rocco, here boy').

As for Mr. Woods, he's on that ultimate plane- with Ali, Mays, Jordan, Sampras, Pele. Rarely happens, but when it does, you just sit back, watch and grin. I root for Tiger every time he plays- can't wait to see Nichlaus dethroned. Just 4 more majors to tie, 5 more to win. Jack, you're still great- but you're no Tiger.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR AN OBAMA PRESIDENCY

Reagan is an iconic figure but is adored by the GOP because of his accomplishments, his beliefs, and his integrity. He backed it up with actions.

My first reaction was total agreement- my preference is a competent chief executive, not a savior. But second thoughts creep in. JFK still inspires people, as does MLK and RFK, even Elvis, for god's sake. And it's not just liberals- how often did GOP contenders lay sacrifices at Ronald Reagan's altar? Maybe it's pathetic- or maybe it's just us. Many will be disappointed to discover that Obama's not a saint. Others will remain silly and giddy. But many seek inspiration, a higher calling. It's kind of how were built.

It seems to me that much of western civilization derives from a single line of hero worship (from someone who isn't a worshipper). This isn't an ode to cultist hero worship. It's an attempt to realistically assess human behavior.

PARTY LIKE IT'S 1980 ALL OVER AGAIN

Though the 1980 election is a better parallel, the 1976 election provides a slightly different analogy. Voters rejected Ford- a Nixon surrogate- in favor of Carter, a bright, new though untested commodity. Ford was unable to break free of the shackles of Nixon's weighty unpopularity, try as he might. Carter was the change candidate, honest to a fault, the un-Nixon. 1976 and 2008 are both change elections, and both focused upon phantom candidates- former presidents who weren't running (Nixon and GWB).

You've made the 1980 argument throughout the campaign. Your spidey senses are spot on. I remember that race quite well- it was close until the debates, when voters broke to Reagan after reaching an assurance level that he wasn't a radical. The level of Carter malaise coupled with a clear break in direction caused a political avalanche. If Barack is able to make the same assurance (that he's mainstream), this election will break the same way.

"THE ALLENTOWN SYNDROME"

That being said, Bill Clinton was the last Dem presidential candidate who knew how to win Reagan Dems. I don't see Obama or Hillary as being strong in this area.

Maybe it's just me but I thought Cheney's "so?" statement on 70% war opposition was just a tad bit condescending, especially vis-a-vis Obama's statement.

ELITISM AND THE ELITIST ELITES WHO THINK THEY'RE THE ELITE

Brilliant. Over the years, some of these same thoughts have ricocheted off various parts of my brain. Of course, I lack your ability to consolidate and clearly set them forth. Thanks for saving me the hard work.
