If we had a tight border would containing the flu be easier? I know that is probably a stupid question but it is one the "open borders-a human being isn't illegal" needs to answer.

Hopefully this thing can just be a scare. But, what if is isn't? Worse, what if the Mexicans panic and flood the border looking to escape death, or receive better medical treatment and endanger us all?

The knee-jerk reaction for most undecided voters is to blame the President and his party for whatever economic problems the country is facing. The economy's going to be shaky for a good while past the election. Let's face it folks, barring something bizarre happening,we're facing a radical, left-wing president and a far-left congress. Fasten your seatbelts because it's gonna be a bumpy ride for the next four to (God forbid) eight years.

McCains tactics are to throw as much untruths out there as he possibly can in order to HIDE the big picture from America. Some Americans are so busy talking about the troops Obama did not visit in Germany for whatever reason, that they miss all the other visits he has done, both at Walter Reed and abroad...they are missing the "forest" because the trees are in the way and blocking their view.
An American Presidential candidate is being LOVED by the whole world and YET, McCain can use this to say that Obama has no experience in world politics...THE FUNNY THING is that some are SO IGNORANT that they can´t see BOTH McCain and BUSH jumping onto the Obama way of dealing with world, world leaders and worldly situations...the world is agreeing with OBAMA PEOPLE...of course those trees are in your line of vision YET AGAIN....just can´t see the forest can you???
McCain these past weeks has run a NON campaign of unreasonable attacks on NOTHING....."AIR ATTACTS" with no substance or TRUTH....and yet there are those who listen and believe the HYPE and LIES..... WHY????
NOW PEOPLE, if McCain will lie and make up stuff right before your very EYES as a candidate...what will he do once he is the POTUS???? Will he become HONEST JOHN or will he be 10 times WORSE than the idiot you people voted for TWICE????

@Dave Turson: if the Obama Seal does violate the law, what do you want to bet that any mention of the illegality will be smoothly rebuffed with the race card?
What I'm waiting for, assuming that The Messiah wins in November, is some sort of push to get rid of that pesky amendment to the Constitution that would limit us to a mere 8 years of the Lightbringer. Because, you know, the Constitution is a living document that couldn't have possibly taken such an enlightened being into consideration.

I can't believe I'm even halfway defending San Fran Nan, but this is just wrong: "One little example: gas prices have increased more since the Nancy Pelosi broke the marble ceiling than they did in the previous six years." I haven't seen such an egregious example of correlation being equated with causation in quite a while.
Don't misunderstand me--I can't think of a single thing Pelosi has done that I agree with. But blaming her for the run-up in gas prices is about as justifiable as blaming Bush for it.

Well, since Obama comes from Chicago and all, if he's calling Lebanese patronage corrupt then it's got to be out there on a whole 'nother level of corruption. I'm sure that it's the politicians giving the good jobs to their campaign donors that's making Lebanon such a hellhole.

It is always enjoyable to read about the bizarre coincidences that led to Ferdinand's death (although they would have got him eventually and the war would have happened eventually because of the force of history . . . which is the real point of that story of coincidence).
I am very sympathetic to problems in critical thinking but it should be noted that this essay is a poor example of actual critical thinking.
By attributing these conspiracy theories to the 'paranoid left' and other versions of 'the left' he is missing the actual reasons for conspiracies and fanciful thinking being so pervasive. It would be easy to demonstrate that 'the right' is not immune from such things and his essay ironically helps prove the point.
For instance, fear is a central part of human nature and it can be manipulated by feelings of loss of control. The current administration has tweaked this mercilessly for political gain and has set the sensitivity for believing conspiracies even lower.
The results of the poll he cites do not suggest that people think that the US government orchestrated 9/11. They say that a lot of people believe that the US government had advanced warning that it might happen and didn't act on it. They would be correct. The 9/11 Commission and other investigations have revealed this to be factual.
The 9/11 'Truthers' that he refers to are conspiracy nuts but conflating them with people who think the government had warnings that they didn't act on is dishonest. Its almost like saying that Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11 (through Kevin Bacon, no doubt).
And Bush probably did go to war, in some large measure, for oil (and that may be a legitimate strategic aim that was smothered by the deceptive approach that his administration took).
As I pointed out earlier, I am very sympathetic to the argument that great teachers help children learn how to think and that critical thinking is in short supply. People who engage in lousy thinking and call it critical thinking are not helping.
