BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: AMATEUR HOUR FOR SENATE DEMS

Diamond:

I am an independent and am not looking for a pissing contest. I asked Mr. Moran to define the role of the minority party in the United States at this time, whether minority rights are of any significance, if a two party system is still relevant, and exactly how the minority party in a two party system is supposed to legitimately impact the political process. Nothing in your response answers these questions. A thoughtful response is still welcome.

Rick Moran is a very thoughtful and articulate conservative with a blog; a rare bird, indeed. Just out of curiosity, sir, what do you see as the role (if any)of an opposition party in our republic? Is protection of minority (in this context, number of voters, not ethnicity) interests of any value? If it still has value, how should it be expressed politically by members of the minority party?

Perhaps I am wrong, but the general impression left by Republican politicians is that since they are in majority control of the administrative and legislative branches of the federal government, Democrats should sit down, shut up and stay the hell out of the way. Are their any legitimate tools for a minority party to use? If so, what are they? (Apparently using the actual rules of the Senate is not legitimate.) If there are no legitimate roles or tools for a minority party to influence political decisions, the logical conclusion is that a two party system of government is no longer viable. Your response, please.

ALITO: THE GAME IS AFOOT

The Captain is optimistic indeed. Confirmation will much more likely be by a vote of 52-48, with the nuclear option detonated. The in-fighting among Democrats over the nuclear option will not match the current cat fight between fiscal conservatives and social conservatives on the Republican side. The split has gotten so bad, in Kansas of all places, that a major conservative Republican county attorney, Paul Morrison of wealthy Johnson County, has declared for the state Attorney General's office AS A DEMOCRAT to oppose social conservative Phill Kline, the current holder of the office. The Republican Big Tent is simply ripping apart.

THE FULMINATER

From Mr. Moran:
"And there is an essential idiocy in believing that the federal government is the best entity to handle local disasters."

Hurricane Katrina is a local disaster?

"Those facts include unless supplies are prepositioned, no significant help will arrive until the roads are clear."

Helicopters can fly 300 mile round trips.

"THere will be plenty of blame to go around here."

Amen, brother. Putting tens of thousands of people in the Superdome and N.O. Convention Center w/o food and water stockpiles-local and criminal. Louisiana Governor - hand flapping incompetence. FEMA - what, are we supposed to do something? Bush - hey, handlers were out of town. I get a mulligan. Conservatives - starve the social service aspects of government because it doesn't fit our agenda - impact will now be remembered at the ballot box. Liberals - singing Kumbyya, Bush bashing and longing for the good ole days doesn't help a single soul. Forget the 60's - figure out how to be relevant NOW.

KATRINA: RESPONSE TIMELINE

I am not a conservative, but want to say two things. One, this timeline is a valuable contribution to understanding a horrific disaster. Two, it is good to have a place to get a reasoned, articulate conservative voice without the shrill hyperbole of talk radio or the shameless self-promotion and unresearched bloviation of most blogs. Don't always agree with Mr. Moran's conclusions, but I never leave here thinking it was a waste of time to read what was presented. Thanks.
