The only problem with satellite TV is the loss of signal when a storm is in the vicinity. Lucky certainly looks like a keeper!

The US will become the Soviet Union with Obama and a filibuster proof senate. And like in the Soviet Union, it will take about 70 years of hell before the people wake up and revolt. And after that another 20-30 years to get back to where we are today.

Well I am proud to say that I was one who was singing the praises of Orton for the past several years. Many tought I was nuts, I continued to proclaim that this man is a diamond in the rough and should be our starter. He got his chance and as it turns out, he has talent! IT is nice to be right once in a while. Now I must prophesize, it is my belief, that this year, and possibly next year will be development years for the Bears. We are on the cusp of a dynasty. They actually made more smart decisions than dumb ones in the offseason (although they had their share of dumb ones), if they continue to make smart decisions this year, we will see a new Chicago Bears. Some youth on that O line would be a welcome addition. Let Grossman go (they should have kicked him to the curb instead of Griese last year), POSSIBLY pick up a veteran back up from free agency, OR start developing Haine as he showed some impressive digs in the offseason. GET RID OF BABICH, and find a defensive coordinator that is worth a shit. If Singletary does not make it as a head coach, I would like to see him as the tower man for the Bears. We need to get some new life in that defense. I am kind of torn on Lovie Smith, if he gets someone solid running the D, that could be the missing link....
Mark my words, the next Dynasty in NFL football is these Chicago Bears, possibly your 2009 Bears, definately our 2010 Bears....
assuming of course we don't go back to doing stupid shit in the offseason!

One more thing. I find that when "conservatives" talk about Reagan they tend to mythologize, so you need to check their facts. You said that Reagan produced a 400% GDP increase in 25 years which you describe as unprecedented. What you say is not true. First, the 400% is nominal GDP, not real GDP, so it doesn't mean much. Second, the period from 1950 to 1975 saw a 550% gain in nominal GDP, so the gains after Reagan were inferior. Third, the real GDP gains after Reagan were average to a bit below average for 25 year periods anytime since WWI.
Of course Reagan's GDP gains must be weighed against the massive increase in national debt that he ran up. On balance his performance was not that great.

Yes, Carter tried to make the point that we faced constraints in the '70s. He put forward an energy plan 30 years ago that is now being seen as the correct one. Reagan did defeat Carter's realism with sunny optimism. He made the nation feel good again, and then he kicked off our descent to the status of the world's greatest debtor nation.
The fact that there are constraints in this world will become all too clear in the coming years. I'm glad that we have new leadership with an adult-level understanding of the world to face those challenges.

I live in Seattle and my politics are as you would expect. I know that Middle America and right-wingers like Rick view us as liberal oddballs. Looking at poll numbers out of various countries yesterday that showed 75% plus support for Obama, however, brought home the fact that we liberals are the normal ones. It's "conservative" Americans who are the freaks by world standards. Reading Rick's post and several responses made me understand the reason. There's lots of talk here about pioneering and taming the frontier. The remaining red states are in the sparsely inhabited parts of America. The trouble is that you people haven't realized that there is no longer a frontier. You cannot push west because we're already here and most of you are not particularly welcome to join us. The reality of the 2000's is that we now live in an environment of constraints, of zeros-sum trade-offs. Europeans have faced this for generations and their politics has adapted to it. The sooner that it sinks into the minds of backward-looking "conservatives" the better off we'll all be.
An era of limits? Democrats have tried that - Carter back in the 70's. All it took was Volker and Reagan to remove the artificial constraints on the economy and we increased GDP by 400% over a quarter of a century. Never been done before at any time in the history of the industrialized world.
I think you are sincere when you say that but it presupposes the people stand still and don't innovate, don't create new opportunities - out of nothing I might add. This lack of faith in the genius of ordinary people is a pretty good base issue for Republicans to run against.

I've been reading right wing blogs for a long time and I think I've been to over 50 different ones over the last several years...this is the lamest, most limp-dicked, mindless, uninteresting, pedantic sh**house ever. Bbbblllleeccchhhhhhh...whats that smell?
You haven't even scratched the surface of right wing blogs if you think this one is bad. Compared to most others, this one is a font of reason and an oasis of prudence and probity.

Rick, you put your finger exactly on the issue when you mentioned the Soviet Union. Semanticleo also expanded on the point well. The Cold War was indeed the motivator for the Apollo project. We were very afaid of the Soviet Union and their space program was ahead of ours in lauching satellites and men into space. To acknowledge a technological defeat by the fearsome Soviets threatened the country in a serious manner.
All political steam for space exploration was tied up indefeating the Russians to the moon, and all of the steam escaped once the goal was accomplished. We have coasted on fumes ever since.
Our manned space program has done nothing since, as you stated. The Space Station is an antiquated pile of space debris. The Shuttle is a Model T that lamely carries on to no space exploration avail. Its like watching a magician pull a rabbit out of a hat repeatedly for 20 years and no new tricks. What a waste for manned space exploration.
But I vote with Semanticleo. Let's put space exploration on hold for 20 years and pursue a Manhattan Project, an Apollo moon landing project, for oil independence. What we learn doing this will also be useful for a renewed space effort in a generation.
