A SHORT POST ABOUT GRASPING AT STRAWS

O'Hanlon is the principle author of the Brookings Iraq Index report (see page 13), the last of which was issued on July 26th.

When he claims that "fatality rates are down roughly a third since the surge began" Does he:

A: Assume no one reads his own Iraq Index reports?

B: Assume no one really understands what "a third" means?

C: Doesn't give a rats arse and is just blowing smoke up ours?

Are any of these answers good news?

SMELLS LIKE VINDICATION TO ME

The problem is, as the AP article points out, Lugar, like Hagel, talks the talk but admits they will not cast a vote to walk the walk.

So while it may make you feel somewhat vindicated, it does nothing to actually address the situation.

OBAMANIA! IS HE THE LIBERAL REAGAN?

I'd give Obama a 1 in 3 shot at the nomination.

And seriously folks, the democrat nomination process is essentially going to decide who the next president is.

END OF AN ERA? FALWELL PASSES

What do Jerry Falwell and Ozzy Osborne have in common?

Both got rich making Rock & Roll look evil.

IN WHICH IT BECOMES APPARENT THAT MORT KONDRACKE SHOULD BE FORCED TO DRESS AS A SUNNI MUSLIM AND UNCEREMONIOUSLY DUMPED IN THE MIDDLE OF SADR CITY

So if the surge fails plan B is to... fail?

How about plan C? Just leave them to it?

Because there's absolutely no difference between the two except for the kids we'll lose in plan B.

ENDGAME

Hang in there Rick. In the end you only answer to yourself.

DEMS TO VOTERS: "WE WERE ONLY KIDDING."

Both Reid and Pelosi are denying the story. But what's really silly is that there weren't binding withdrawal time tables in the bill to begin with.

Most likely the compromise will be the dems eventually removing what soft timetable requirements the bill had, while Bush agrees to enact a milestone timefram for the Iraqi government.

TIME IS NOW THE BIGGEST ENEMY IN IRAQ

Hugh Hewitt’s interview of Max Boot who recently returned from Iraq is interesting as well as relevant to this discussion.

Let's see, a guy who's been consistantly and mind boggingly wrong on every aspect of the Iraq debate interviews an author who has been consistantly and mind boggingly wrong on every aspect of the Iraq debate.

I'll pass.

Good post Rick, and I'm sorry about the rants from the wingnuts.

But hey, lie down with (and actively encourage) fleas, and you'll have that.

Whatever you do, don't delete any of these comments. They will be historically priceless one day in educating our country.

IRANIAN NUKE PROGRAM STALLED?

Wow.

An excellent excellent post Rick. Seriously.

I would only add that it appears China is coming on board for sanctions against Iran with some energy assurances from Saudi Arabia.

Also, not only is this not the time to launch an alpha strike on Iran's facilities (and certainly not a ground incursion), but it's also a good time to tone back the rhetoric a bit, let Iran stew a while as it's former supporters begin to back away from it, and see what happens.
