CNN HOLDS GOP DEBATE - MOSTLY

I mean, are you actually saying that if Republicans had asked questions at the Dem debate that you wouldn’t have been outraged?

So you honestly believe that didn't happen?

And I'm certain it was a Democrat who asked "I'd like to know, if the Democrats come into office, are my taxes going to rise like usually they do when a Democrat gets into office?"

And of course if was probably Nancy Pelosi's son who asked "To all the candidates: Tell me your position on gun control, as myself and other Americans really want to know if our babies are safe. This is my baby, purchased under the 1994 gun ban."

Because if so, well I'm speechless.

"WILL NO ONE RID ME OF THIS MEDDLESOME TERRORIST?"

What if, as happened during the Clinton Administration, a high ranking foreigner was with Osama and killing him might have caused trouble in other areas of American diplomacy?

Rick Rick Rick..

You'll never be able to grasp the nuance of the situation with that Sep. 10th mindset dude.

DEMOCRATS CAN'T FIND ANYONE TO HELP THEM SURRENDER

Nowhere in the post do I use the word “victory”

So if you feel there is no "victory" to be had, how exactly are democrats surrendering?

It's been said time and time again and it's still true. If you rely on moderate republicans to do the right thing you're gonna be screwed.

Even Rick, who by all accounts has realized the folly of this war to some extent, still believes it's more useful as a tool of politics than it is horrible as a means of death, destruction, and siphoning of the Treasury.

This post proves it.

LAYING IT IN ON THE LINE FOR PEACE

busboy, you're being a bit unfair I think.

Both "chicken" arguments are silly.

Our President didn't tell us we should go to war. He told us he should go to the Mall.

There is no draft. Considering that, 100k in DC is pretty incredible.

I have a grudging respect for Rick. And this post is certainly not his best work. But he's getting there. It's apparantly a painful transition.

not just people simply posting to a blog a message that no one will actually really care or do anything about after they’re done reading it.

Well, obviously Rick has read the posts. He seems a bit obsessed with Greenwald. Obviously he's a poser, I mean he didn't fly the 5000 miles or so to DC for a demonstration.

I get it. It's the Reverse Chicken Hawk attack.

An unusual attack coming from Rick to be sure.

But seriously, what else does he have?

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE...

The left and cooky environmentalists (this constitutes the majority of the Democratic Party) who will not let us drill here and explore off the coast of Florida

So now Jeb Bush and his brother are members of "the left and cooky environmentalists"??

You do realize that it was George W. Bush who refused to allow exploration in the Destin Dome area of the Gulf at the request of his brother right?

MAKING "SENSE" OF THE SURGE

And then we have the hilariously ironic spectacle of the left using body counts to justify withdrawal.

Well, I personally know The Left and it seems to me The Left's main reason for supporting withdrawal is that we can't do anymore for the Iraqi people, we can't afford 12 billion dollars a month to accomplish little or nothing and that the entire quagmire isn't worth even one more American death.

Maybe you've been speaking to an imposter?

As to Petreaus being a more "competent general" I'll just cite his track record. He had the difficult task of training Iraqi Army unites as well as Iraqi Police Services. After an investment of over 20 billion dollars we currently have a disfunctional Iraqi Army more beholden to various militias than to the government. And I'm sure we both agree the Iraqi Police are even more of a problem.

This does not necessarily reflect poorly on Petreaus, as I said, this was an incredibly difficult assignment. But it's not exactly a gold star either.

MAKING THE CASE FOR A LONG TERM COMMITMENT TO IRAQ

gregdn

I think the answer is obvious. We don't trust them with that type of weaponry.

But once we begin redeploying, I think we'll have to provide at a minimum some artillery and tanks.

Cordsman makes a good point regarding the staggering amount of equipment we have in Iraq.

But the fact is we'd be idiots to try to salvage a lot of it. The thousands of portable buildings housing everything from troops to internet cafes to gedunks aren't worth the cost of bringing them home or even sending them elsewhere in the world.

The same goes for lots of other equipment and some rolling stock. Additionally, are we planning on giving the Iraqi Army any armor?

But the idea that we have to stay in Iraq indefinately because we sunk a lot of money into our embassy.

Regardless of whether or not withdrawal is the right plan, not withdrawing because it will take too long (I guesstimate six months or so) seems foolhardy.

Thanks for bringing Cordsman's story to my attention Rick. And I agree with your conclusion paragraph. We "may" have to go back in the future. And we should be prepared to do so. But not in these numbers, and not without a reasonable plan and goal.
