If was simply a joke gone bad do the simple non-apology apology where you say you are sorry that people misunderstood. He went beyond that by attacking Bush, Snow, Rove and Rush. Usually when poeple make such a fuss over something it's because they know they are wrong.

Thanks, Edward, for pointing something out. Enemies of American soldiers are our enemies, as our soldiers are agents of the government, sent on a mission by the representatives of the American people.
When Bill Clinton sent American troops into Somalia, Somalians became our enemy. In Kosovo, Serbians were our enemy. It's quite simple, really. Whomever is opposing our armed forces is our enemy. If they are not your enemy, then which side are you on?

Well, ed, since both sides see themselves as the "good guys", whose side are you on? Were the Nazis also good guys? Should we have aired German newsreels of heroic Nazi resistance to capitalist imperialism to provide balance?

In reality, all of this stuff needed to be addressed. The Saudi money, the Pakistani madrassas, the Iranian nukes, all of the pus beneath the surface of the Islamic world, brought to our attention when the sore of 9/11 erupted.
The short term of the Long War will be extremely messy, complicated, and unnerving. Only by allowing these festering wounds to show themselves will civilization be able to treat them, if it chooses.

You have characterized the defenses from past and present well. Remember when Ryan left and the defense was actually statistically better the next year, but not as intimidating? People generally believed they were not as good, because quarterbacks were not shitting themselves coming out of the huddle.
This year's edition has the tools and the attitude. If the offense continues to believe that they can score, if not at will, at least occasionally, then we will see a reprise of the "Super Bowl Shuffle". Bring on Steve Fuller.

DaleinAtlanta, I don't think Juan Cole can be expected to have a firm grasp of the many different schools -- and their geographic locations -- within Shiite Islam. He can barely write in English.
