There is an obvious strategy: Attack, attack, attack. Whatever it is - attack.
And they are right (if morally wrong). Throw enough sh-t at the wall, and some of it sticks, rightly or wrongly. There is an air of desperation to it, leaving dignity and integrity far behind.

It's a non-story. Watch just anything in the news be used to try to skewer the administration. Literally anything. Snow, rain, sun, etc. Content is irrelevant: attack is the thing.

I agree that Bush has been a disappointment is the ways you list. I have no idea why. He has puzzled me for years, and I'm sure he gets good advice. Despite his bully pulpit, he never uses it.

You are more of an historian than I, but I beg to differ with your assertion that this nation was "founded on religious diversity." On thecontrary, this nation was founded almost entirely on Christian-inspired, Protestant, Enlightenment notions of man's place and role in the world, and man's relationship with God. Founded on a modern concept of "diversity" - no way.
Tolerant - yes, but at the time, that meant a small number of Catholics and Jews. What tolerance meant at the time, mostly, was that the Congregationalists in New England couldn't lord it over the Presbyterians in New York.

Israel will not be pleased, though.
Fortunately, we do not need to agonize over what to do with Saddam. His country gets to decide, and they seem to be a country which is generally comfortable with execution and beheading for far less.
