THE NINE PERCENTERS

I think your post illuminates an interesting phenomena. Both you, and many of the commenters, define "wrong track" in political terms. I would argue that perhaps that 9% are the people who don't define their lives on the state of politics in the country.

As you have mentioned, a President Obama will not change the character of the Republic. However, if the citizens define their lives, fortunes, and honor on the quicksand of politics, then yes we are in for trouble.

OBAMA'S "GLASS HOUSE" OFFENSIVE

I find it interesting that no one brings up any of the other names in the Keating 5. Two Johns, two national heroes, were found to be sullied by money. Yes, I was disheartened and it will always be a mark against McCain in my book. But, I wonder if anyone realizes what they are saying by bringing this up? It sounds to me like: "Senator Obama is no more corrupt than any other Senator." That's an accolade?

LEFTY CAMPAIGN FOLLIES

I think why some of the netroots are going down this path is that Sen. Obama made the questions look hard, they conclude that they were hard. It's pretty bad when a candidate for President makes softball questions look hard.

JEROME CORSI, SCREWBALL

"Even the crooks are entertaining..." So true, so true, and it brought tears to my eyes while I was laughing. Only in Congress can there be a debate over the "ethics" of a member that's been caught red-handed.

REMEMBERING THE BOMB, FORGETTING WHY

I do believe that Truman placed quite a bit of weight on what Americans might think if he didn't use it. Imagine trying to explain to the people why several hundreds of thousands of Americans had to die in an invasion when we had another option.

THE NEW YORK TIMES VS. COMMON DECENCY

I noticed they anonomously sourced a number of people at the CIA who talked with them. Then, "Mr Martinez who declined to be interviewed..."

If you're a source for the Times your identity is safe. If you're not, you're fair game. That sounds like a form of extortion, talk or be named.

THE PATRIOT GAME

This, your earlier piece, and Mr. Beinart's were all stirring, congratulations are very much in order.

The line "the most schizophrenic nation imaginable" especially hit it out of the park. That one gave me a hearty laugh and a "tis true" moment.

Excellent writing, thank you.

THE ALIENS HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED

A number of years ago Carl Sagan wrote an article for Nature on why life doesn't exist on Earth. His thesis was that using the technology available at the time (one of the planetary probes) we would conclude that there was no life on Earth and certainly no intelligent life.

His first point: the oxygen content is too high. Oxygen is a highly corrosive element and is unlikely to be conducive to life. Think of a planet with a high chlorine content atmosphere, would you expect life to evolve there?

Another of his points: The planet is highly geologically active. This mitigates the ability of life to start or hold on.

It was a wonderful article and pointed out nicely that there might be life on other planets but we just wouldn't recognize it.

THE 'MAN ON A WHITE HORSE' SYNDROME

These events remind me of Grateful Dead fans from 30 years ago, "it's not the music, it's the total transcendance." Ben and Jerry did come up with "Cherry Garcia," it should be interesting to see what they come up with for a Sen. Obama flavor.

Fraught with possibilities.

WHEN WILL OBAMA RESPOND TO 'APPEASEMENT' CHARGE?

It really doesn't matter who Bush had in mind. The first person to jump up and say "he's talking about me" wins the prize. The more I see, the more I realize how inexperienced Obama is. His political sense is just as naive, afterall he's never faced a real campaign.
