THE LONG MARCH BEGINS FOR CONSERVATIVES

Be calm, Sour-Grapes Conservatives. Your first choice(s) are out of contention; now you have to decide whether you want a lot of the Parade of Horribles trotted out by Paul Ramsey in comment #2, or only a little bit of it. It simply wouldn't be as bad as you're predicting under a McCain Administration. I'm not saying McCain is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative; I'm saying he wouldn't be nearly as bad as either of the Democrats.

McCain isn't a tax-cutter, it's true. He's a budget hawk. Is the idea of a balanced budget really such an awful thing that the GOP can't get behind it? McCain doesn't think that either bald eagles or illegal immigrants should be hunted for sport, but that doesn't mean that he would either open the borders or tear down our industries. McCain is a hawk on the Iraq war, terrorism, and keeping Iran non-nuclear and under control.

No, he's not my first choice, either. That happens in politics sometimes. But I'll vote for him because he's the best available choice.

WHO HAS THE POWER?

"...you must accept that there has been a fundamental shift in the balance of power in the Republican party away from the old Reagan coalition and toward a still forming mass of more centrist, less doctrinaire conservatives."

If McCain (a budget hawk rather than a tax cutter) makes us the "balanced budget" party, that's all for the good. If McCain keeps us in a place where a strong, aggressive defense manned by a smart and powerful military and is an essential part of our national policy, that's all for the good. If we wind up muting the shrill cries of the Al Gores of the world by balancing environmental and commercial concerns instead of treating the issue as a zero-sum game, that's all for the good. If we wind up with a compromise package on immigration reform, that's certainly better than what we've got now! And if McCain somehow gets us past the electoral cul-de-sac that is abortion, that's all for the good (I don't think that's within his capabilities, though).

OF "GOD'S STANDARDS" AND CONSERVATISM

Okay, Sidney, I'll take you at your word that Rick's interpretation of what the Huckster meant by "God's standards" is not correct. But Huckabee meant something by what he said; it was an "applause line" for a reason.

Not being a churchgoer, I don't know the code. What, exactly, does the phrase "God's standards" mean, with regards to what the government's relationship is to the individual, and in particular with regards to amending the Constitution?

COULD CONSERVATIVES WORK WITH A PRESIDENT OBAMA?

Re: your update. I, for one, don't see how working with (rather than against) a Democratic President would condemn Republicans to permanent minority status. One bad even-numbered year in the war, or one bad even-numbered year in the economy, and voters will look to the other party for different ideas. That's when Republicans have an opportunity to offer their own vision for how the country should be, and if the vision sells, President Obama will wind up working with a Republican-controlled Congress -- or be on the fighting uphill side of things when he runs for re-election himself.

I think you're pretty much right, Rick. President Obama would reach out to the Republicans, at least until the first time they bit his hand for doing so. Hopefully, there would not be Obama Derangement Syndrome and we could return to the days when there was a "loyal opposition" as the minority party, serving as a brake on the excesses of the majority, as opposed to calling one another traitors and semi-humans.

A "HELL" OF A HOTEL

Blog Trotter, you apparently have not been to Las Vegas on a regular weekend recently. Finding a room in Las Vegas on a Friday or Saturday night with no reservation is a little bit like trying to find an open seat on the 4 line at 5:20 p.m. in midtown Manhattan. It ain't happening. Sure, there's plenty of rooms in the big hotels, but they're all -- ALL -- booked. From the airport to Fremont Street, any hotel-casino of note is 100% booked for the weekend months in advance. When I go, it's for a reason, and I've taken to staying at non-casino hotels, either well off the Strip or south of the airport. Takes some of the fun out of it, but it beats sleeping in the rental car.

A SALAMANDER STORY

That lizard may as well be slathered in salmon unless you put him in a terrarium.

I think he knows the danger he's in; a lizard's fear response is to freeze because most of its predators in the wild sense motion. Cats are attracted to motion, too, but they're smart enough to know where the lizard is even if he stands still.

I hope his remains don't smell too bad.

THE FRED SURGE

As I see it, Thompson's surge is coming largely at Romney's expense, not Rudy's. Giuliani's numbers have remained stable for the past several weeks despite Thompson's antics. Right Said Fred is absorbing a lot of the "none of the above" discontent and, by running a campaign that is largely content-free so far, he is trying hard to keep on wearing the mantle of All Things to All Republicans. Some of the commenters above are unabashed in their love for his perceived conservatism; whether that perception will survive the real analysis of the primary election remains to be seen.
