DAVID FRUM, THE BIG TENT, AND SPLENETIC CONSERVATIVES

A fine summary Rick, let's see if "splenetic conservative" becomes part of the larger vocabulary in 2009! Just one question; how would this rebuilt conservative/republican party deal with independents and democrats when it comes to getting things done? To what extent can its values and/or beliefs be compromised to pass legislation and to win moderates/independents over to the cause? Dealing with the other party and playing to the swing voters is going to play a part in any comeback of the GOP, but how big a part will it be?

A LATE AFTERNOON STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS POST ABOUT NOTHING MUCH IN PARTICULAR

Calm down dude, this is just the press exalting out loud. A certain amount of this is to be expected with any new president, but with his celebrity persona and charming family (and boredom of 8 Bush years), Obama is getting praise from the MSM even if he just says "hello". It will change to more balanced coverage by the end of the year, wait and see.

I WILL MISS THE LEFT'S BUSH DERANGEMENT

One has to wonder what BDS has in common with CDS. After all, the right was surely fixated on Clinton's misdeeds for 8 long years, just as the left has been just now. If I may hazard a guess, is it not possible that all these hatred of these two men over the past 16 years was because they were the 2 biggest phonies ever in office?

I think CDS was much more conspiratorial than even BDS - the whole Vince Foster thing on the right gives me the creeps. Like 9/11 truthers on steroids. And then came the Ron Brown conspiracy - truly whacko.

BDS was more pure malevolence - hatred born of ignorance and lust for power. That's what gave it its patina of unhinged delusion.

WHY GEITHNER HAS GOT TO GO

Keep in mind that Obama is still in his honeymoon phase with the American public and media. Were this to happen a year from now with the honeymoon over, Geithner would probably not survive the backlash. He just got lucky timing for a scandal, thats all.

INVESTIGATING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION A PARTISAN MINEFIELD

Thank you lionheart for pointing out that our courts can take a while to come to their senses. Over the years, our courts have propped up many bad laws and made rulings that violate the sprit of our constitution. I see that nothing has changed...

Amazing how some people can't trust the Government to run health care, but trust it implicitly to never spy on them! (Since when did the right to privacy become exclusively the domain of the Left and the Libertarians?) Warentless wiretapping is an erosion of our civil liberties, plain and simple.

TALKING WITH HAMAS

My question is, what should Obama be doing instead of talking to Hamas? The only way to really destroy Hamas is to invade Gaza with 50,000 marines and occupy it for at least 5 years. Now that may be a war well worth undertaking, but we cannot afford it right now nor does the American public desire to. Just ignoring Gaza like Bush is doing now will not work either. So really, why this anger with Obama over this? What else could he do? If he can't get rid of Hamas, he may as well talk with them just as long as he doesn't expect much out of it.

I know some commentators will disagree, but this situation is largely the fault of the 2005 elections in the Palestinian areas. These people are not ready for democracy; they are too poor and angry to decide their fate in a rational manner. Why did Bush and Rice push this matter and then acted all hurt and surprised when the blow-back arrived? Now we have to deal with these Jew haters!

PS-Rick, the biggest thing that I have taken away from your writing (so far) is the term "Jew hater". It is a shocking word to use in normal conversation with people who are used to the prettified term "Anti-Semite". Thank you for enriching the lexicon!

BLOODTHIRSTY JEWS BRUTALLY MURDER HAMAS BABIES

The biggest enemy of the Palestinian people ever since the end of the Ottoman Empire has been the Palestinian leadership. (From the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem right on up to Hamas, these folks have a knack for fucking their people over big time!) That being said, Israel seems determined to hand Obama his first big crisis right on January 20.

Observe how Obama is stating the "one president at a time" mantra; he seems just as confused as the rest of us as to how to solve this problem. Of all the things he has promised to fix, the Israel/Palestine perpetual crisis seems the least likely to get solved in the next 4/8 years. For while Israel might change its leadership to one more likely to make peace, the odds of the Palestinians doing so are slim to none.

PS- "If there’s anything a liberal hates it’s being ignored." Rick, you are sure this doesn't apply to conservatives too? Your headline betrays that statement...

Heh - got me there. Actually, the last couple of days I've received more notice than usual - not all of it welcome.

IS 'BARACK THE MAGIC NEGRO' RACIST?

Nobody is going to remember the overreaction of the Democrats to the "magic negro"; they will just think of the republicans as being patronizing at best, borderline racist at worst. This is just another idiot move by the RNC. Do republicans need more of this kind of publicity? Chip Saltsman must be preparing for the GOP to be in the minority for a very long time!

JINDAL IS NOT THE ANSWER

The most that Bobby Jindal can be the answer for is the State of Louisiana. (From what I understand he is doing a decent job down there, as a man's personal beliefs have nothing to do with cleaning up a corrupt political establishment.) I'm in agreement that creationists and global-warming deniers have no place near the Oval Office, putting Jindal on the national stage would only serve to weaken the conservative cause.

PS - Good luck keeping the GOP factions together these next few years; judging from the nutcase comments so far, I'd say you're screwed. Which reminds me, what ever happened to that series of articles you were writing on conservatism? Sounds like that would be very relevant now...
