BEGALA: APRIL 15TH SHOULD BE 'PATRIOT'S DAY'

Begala's main argument is pretty trite. However, he does start off the article by stating:

For those who wear a military uniform, those who serve the rest of us as policemen and firefighters and teachers and other public servants, every day is patriots’ day.

Interestingly enough, every time I participate in Jury Duty, a mild patriotic sensation runs through my body. Never happens on April 15th, that's for sure!

The Beckian Wing of Conservatism

If some Republicans are up in arms over a blog post by Rick Moran being critical of Glenn Beck, they are either dangerously insecure or totally intolerant.

GLENN BECK AND THE RADICAL RIGHT

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the major thrust of this post is that Glenn Beck is bad for the conservative movement due to the way he comes across to the general public. When this is combined with his fast-rising star and the declining influence of the traditional right-of-center media figures, what we have is Glenn Beck defining conservatism in the eyes of many Americans.

I think that it is this last point that push Rick to write this article, for in past years when the GOP was healthy, Mr. Beck was hardly registering to the average joe. Now that the chips are down for the party and the nation at large, a new audience of scared people are tuning in to his ideas. It is his overall negative message that threatens to keep the Republicans in the dumps as the USA recovers over the next few years.

OBAMA'S FORIEGN APOLOGIES: WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

My only 2 cents is that Obama was actually quite limited in his choice of actions and words. After the extensive and critically reported (rightly or wrongly) traveling follies of our last president, Obama had a fixed role to play and that's exactly what he did. His entire trip was very predictable; any serious observer (Rick included) was not surprised at all over his choice of words and seemingly humble nature on the European stage. Whether or not they were the best things to say or do remains to be seen, but certainly the short term results are favorable!

BLOWHARD NEW YORK TIMES CONTRIBUTOR A PARANOID LOON

Come on now, the man is just making fun of the clowns that inhabit the fringes of the right wing movement. (It's not serious writing at all, shooting fish in a barrel is closer to it.) What is surprising is that the NYT would even bother with having Mr. Blow waste ink on this subject, when Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do a perfectly wonderful job mocking these same fools 5 times a week!

WHAT SLIPPERY SLOPE?

Why do healthy people need help with suicide? I understand guns are hard to come by in Europe, but can't they just jump of a bridge?

FIRST, THEY CAME FOR THE SMOKERS

The (Anti)Anti-Smokers are fighting a losing demographic battle. As the current smokers die off, fewer young smokers are replacing them. I fully expect cigarette smoking to be 99% restricted to teenagers and 20-somethings in their "rebelling against stuff for a few years phase" by the time retirement rolls around for me. Perhaps cigars and pipes will have better luck holding out against the inevitable, but its not likely with tobacco taxes on the rise.

BOND VS. BOURNE: CONSERVATIVE VALUES TRIUMPH

Tim, no way Rick can be Woodstock. If he is anybody from the Peanuts gang, it would be good old crabby Lucy!

ALZHEIMER'S: THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL

"I suppose if I were being discriminated against because of my race, or gender, or sexual orientation, I might take that personally and my politics would almost certainly reflect that. Similarly, I take it personally that the government wishes to cut funding for Alzheimer’s research and the disease itself is not getting the attention it deserves."

Rick, your (political)honesty and (personal)openness here is illuminating and heartbreaking to read. Thank you for sharing this with us.
