IF REAGAN TOLERATED MODERATES, WHY CAN'T TODAY'S CONSERVATIVES?

But the point is, I think, that Rush, Coulter and Beck DO articulate the movement. You might prefer another movement, but they are articulating the conservative movement — that’s why they are so popular.

But popular with whom, really? Agreed, nobody expects political commentators expressing viewpoints (as opposed to analysis) to be liked by everybody, but these dudes go out of their way to decry and throw under the bus any dissenters. Worse, they are simply unpalatable to nearly anybody not already part of the far-right choir. It's obvious that this unholy trinity is more concerned with making money for themselves than advancing the conservatism they claim to defend.

Rick, I don’t think “Republican” means what you think it means. Maybe it used to. But it doesn’t anymore. Your “Republican” is dead and buried. You’re part of a small and despised minority within what used to be your party. They hate you worse than they hate people like me. They want you to go away. They want you out of their party.

Michael Reynolds has gotten to the heart of what used to interest me about the GOP and yet why I could never join. (Had I been born 20 or even 10 years earlier, perhaps I would be in Rick's shoes right now, attempting to defend an increasingly wayward party.) It's not so much the contradictory positions or the mediocre governing that makes standing up for the GOP so hard these days as it is the lack of decency and openness amongst so many Republican spokespeople. How can any conservative organization grow and thrive in the general population by turning to Rush, Coulter, and Glenn Beck to articulate the movement?

DEMOCRATIC PARTY PARTISANS TO 'OUT' GAY REPUBLICANS

Totally agree here, Democrats should never out Republicans, and vice versa. Such tasks should be left up to the party that the homosexual politicians belong to, and if the party chooses not to out them then they can suffer the consequences. Imagine if the RNC had outed Mark Foley and Larry Craig early in their careers. Would they have been later tarred by sexual scandals that made their entire party and platform look hypocritical?

A REPORT FROM THE FRONT

What Charles Johnson is feeling about Jihad Watch, Gates of Vienna and the Brussels Journal has more to do with the commentators than anything written the the regular authors of the said sites.

For example, I get the strong impression that Robert Spencer (of Jihad Watch) is not anti-Islam on a personal level but is simply highly concerned about the negative social impact of poor and islamist immigrants, as well as the long-term security of the Western world. All to the good, except that 90% of commentators on JW give me the impression that they would like to send all Muslims to the gas chambers. As a result, reading JW makes me sick to my stomach, therefore I haven't looked at it in over 2 years.

The Brussels Journal and Gates of Vienna are smaller and therefore attract less kooks; every week I'm happy to read them (especially the TBJ). Yet even on these 2 sites, crackpot guest authors and commentators have to be sifted through and ignored. Some of this content is in fact racist and prone to conspiracy theories. (Serious sites don't bring up the false controversy re: Obama's birth certificate!) No wonder PJ media dropped GoV from its blog roll.

In short, these are serious topics and I'm sure Charles Johnson would like his "natural allies" to approach them in a serious manner. Right now, sloppy editing and a plethora of whackjobs is not conductive to the serious (yet manageable) threat we all face.

WHY DO CONSERVATIVES SEE RED WHEN OBAMA TALKS GREEN?

Bi-partisanship is the best way to move forward on the environment. While I have more confidence in Obama's "top down solutions" than others here may have, I acknowledge that they certainly won't come cheap. This is a great area for Republicans to step up to the plate and work with the Democrats to help solve problems that will benefit all humanity and save money doing so in the process. However, this may not happen with ODS raging on the right.

NOT A MISPRINT: OBAMA SEEKS CUTS OF 100 MILLION TO CURB DEFICIT

Gotta agree with you this time Rick. When I first heard about this, I assumes that Obama meant 100 Billion dollars, then when it became clear that it was millions, I thought he meant from each cabinet division. This 100 million in total cuts is just a dumb idea. Haven't heard anything this dumb from him since the fake presidential seal back in June.

INDEFENSIBLE: OBAMA FAILS HIS FIRST BIG TEST

Gotta disagree with you this time, Rick. Obama walking out of Ortega's diatribe would just have encouraged his and others of his ilk (ie, Chavez) to keep on spewing such nonsense whenever Obama comes to visit. By sitting down, pretending to listen, and then referencing the fact in his own speech that these events happened a long time ago, Obama neutralized this buffoon. Didn't beat him of course, but then again thats not what is supposed to happen at these intra-nation events. Lets be patient for history to shove this Sandinista into the obscurity he deserves instead of creating a tempest in a teapot that will make his star shine longer.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

Very well done, Mr. Moran! I notice that you give John Cole credit for confronting the truth, but he has quite a bit of doubt that conservatives think the same way. Sad to say, he's pretty justified in his conclusion, at least when it comes to the big name right wing bloggers.

AN FAQ ON THE TEA PARTIES

Its very good news to hear that the Tea Parties went well participation-wise. No matter what the political outcome may eventually be, peaceful and public protests like these harbinger well for American democracy. However, is it too much to hope for that republicans and conservatives will no longer be so dismissive of such demonstrations when they are preformed by the democrats and liberals?
