WRONG WAY OBAMA STRIKES AGAIN

If, as you write, McCain said he is learning to surf the web, doesn't that make the whole "too injured to use a computer" meme false? I am quite aware that logic does not reign supreme in presidential politics, but just a little wouldn't hurt, would it?

The whole damn president race has become a People magazine, Inside Edition gossip and celebrity worship festival. Obama as the new Denzel Washington, Palin now playing the latest Lindsey/Brittney/Paris famous-for-being-famous celebrity, and featuring John McCain as Cotton Hill!

Politics has always been a somewhat ugly, hardball game, but everyone enthusiastically going for the lowest common denominator of stupid is a new low. A pox on them all.

I PREFER THE 'PROM DRESS' ANALOGY MYSELF

Snarky comments from politicans running for office are to be expected. My concern is that I have no presidential candidate to vote for. Sen. Obama is an overreaching back bencher who talks about change but proposes regression to 1960's liberalism. John McCain is a soulless old fart that stands for nothing certain, as he was swapped positions more often that a porn star. I first voted for president (Nixon,if you must know) 36 years ago and I have not missed an election since. So far this year, staying home is the only honorable option to be seen.

DNC PREVIEW: 'COME HOME, AMERICA' REDUX

Oops. A hyphen does not work as it was intended in hypertext.

The statement ". . .that government was a utility, not an engine of change. . ." is a patently false one. Government policy has fueled change in the United States many times.

-The majority of Americans now us seat belts-due to government intervention.
-The majority of Americans no longer smoke-due to government intervention.
-Americans no longer own slaves-due to government intervention.
-People who do not own property can vote-due to government intervention.
-People are no longer locked up in poorhouses-due to government intervention.
-People are not allowed to abuse their children without penalty-due to government intervention.
-People can no longer be forced to work endless hours each week-due to government intervention.
-Children are no longer forced to work in sweatshops-due to government intervention.
-Women are no longer forced to endure sexual harrassment without comment-due to government intervention.
-Most poor people are not forced to do without health care-due to government intervention.

This is a mere drop in the bucket of positive changes pushed into existence by government intervention. Liberalism and activist government has been successfully labeled as evil and as black as Snidley Whiplash's villanous heart, but that does not make it true. Anyone has the right to oppose government as a change agent due to heartfelt political beliefs. It is not true, however, that government cannot and has not acted as a positive agent of change. It can, it has, it will.

REMEMBERING THE BOMB, FORGETTING WHY

Thank you for the very intelligent, thoughtful piece. War is always an ugly enterprise, but sometimes absolutely necessary. The dropping of the atomic bomb was indeed horrific, but not any more terrible than the fire bombings of Tokyo or Dresden in results. And the simple historical fact is that if there had been no Pearl Harbor, there would have been no Nagasaki or Hiroshima.

While perhaps not politically correct today, the facts are that Japan waged a very dirty, ugly war. As you pointed out, the death toll of an invasion of Japan in 1945 would have been extremely high on both sides.

Selfishly, I own my existence to the last bombings of Japan. My father was scheduled to be one of the first few thousand American soldiers, who were told to expect 98-99% casualties. His stories of the Japanese tenacity in fighting on the islands of the South Pacific tell me plenty about what an invasion would have been like. The Japanese soldiers simply would not surrender, despite defeat. Dad told be about being on coral islands where the enemy were entrenched in coral caves and would not give up under any circumstances, leaving the U.S. forces to finally pour aviation fuel into the caves and igniting it, so it would explode and of course suck all of the oxygen out of the cave, ending the lives of the Japanese soldiers and the deaths of American soldiers.

With the passage of time, it is clear that the use of nuclear weapons must be avoided, but Truman did what he had to do in the context of the times. My heart goes out to survivors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, but no more than the victims of Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, the Chinese comfort women and all others who suffered from Japanese atrocities.

'LEAVE BARACK ALONE!'

Now that's funny! I have very similar thoughts about far right wingers, glomming onto every word of faux outrage from Rush, Hannity, Levin, and Savage. Vacuous swill for those who need constant reassurance that their dogma is "the truth." And about as reliable for news as Letterman and the Daily Show. But I will admit, Limbaugh is much funnier than Letterman.

McCAIN CAMPAIGN STILL FOUNDERING

Picking through the verbage, the truth is quitely exposed. John McCain doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected President. Bless his heart, McCain is very, very bad campaigner. While not PC to say, he comes across as just what he is: a grouchy old man. He, fairly or not, represents conservatism, which now has a 40 year track record of massive government spending and expansion, new record national debt levels, an economy no one trusts, and a "war" on terror that is no more winnable through military means than the "war" on poverty. The old chestnut of using the term liberal as a scary epithet now only works on the 28% idiotariat.

Obama has correctly put his finger on the pulse of the electorate. We want change and it doesn't really matter what the change is. That is why the tabla rasa Barack presents is perfect for this election cycle. What we have been through is so thoroughly discredited, we'll take a flyer with someone whose major accomplishment is just not sounding like the village idiot when they speak.

MY CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT - FOR NOW

Hey, Wramblin Wreck, I am from Kansas and I'll have you know we have many shades of grey and several shades of biege here! And sometimes I am just irritated, not angry, I'll have you know. Since I cannot in good conscious vote for Obama and I have given up on McCain, a write-in campaign for Snowball sounds good to me!

THE TIMELINE IS STILL A SUCKY IDEA

When does a timeline become a not sucky idea? The American public will not stand for a forever occupation of Iraq. Period. At some point, US troops will leave Iraq. They will not disappear overnight. The departure will have to be planned and any and all planning will involve a timeline of personnel and equipment movement.

I am equally sick of hearing about "winning" in Iraq. How do we win militarily? The only win left is a stable, democratic Iraq and the Iraqis have to do that for themselves. By definition, all the military might in the world cannot force a democracy. Bush had it exactly 180 degrees backwards. Instead of "When the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down" the truth of the matter is "when we stand down, the Iraqis stand up."

It was a horrific mistake to go into Iraq and all the "success of the surge talk" cannot change that basic fact. If a surgeon amputates the wrong leg, they typically do not spend a lot of time bragging about how well that leg is healing. It's still malpractice and extremely counterproductive, including the fct that the reson for the amputation is still not addressed. 9/11 had nothing to do with Iraq - the real terrorism wound and threat to America is still festering in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and other places that are not Iraq.

DEMS PLAYING ALFONSE AND GASTON WITH VEEP CHOICE

Rick Moran, you know politics far too well to participate in this scrum. Every potential VP selection traditionally states that they have no interest in the job, but they are flattered to be mentioned. Anyone, in either major party, that would be foolish enough to say they are gunning for the veep slot would be instantly dropped from the list. I am no fan of Obama, but this McGovern/VP selection comparison? That dog won't hunt.
